Obituary for Alma Dene Jones
Alma Dene Jones was born in Harmon County in the Lahoma area on November 29, 1932, to James Doyle Jones and Maggie Mae (McDaniel) Jones. Dene passed away on August 24, 2022 in Hollis, Oklahoma. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Hollis.

She first attended Lahoma School in 1938-39 before the school closed. She was supposed to start school until the next year, but on the way to take her older sister to school she cried and cried to attend and they let her since it was the year for the school. Dene graduated from Gould High School in 1950. She and her classmates took a senior trip to Colorado Springs riding in the back of a wheat truck. Her father and stepmother Willie (Green) Gee Jones served as class parents. After graduation, Dene lived in Enid and worked at diary as a dispatcher. In 1952 Dene took a job back in Harmon County working at the courthouse as a deputy sheriff.

In1953, Dene fell in love and married Garland Elmo Jones on September 6th. They made their home in Stillwater, Oklahoma while Garland finished college. After Garland was drafted into the military, Dene and Garland next lived in Baltimore, Maryland. After a while they were stationed in Munich, Germany for 13 months where they traveled through some of Europe. After that time, they returned for a year to lie a mile from their current home and farm. Their son Alan Garland was born in 1956. in 1957 they moved to Quanah, Texas for a teaching position for Garland. During that period, their son Alan contracted the German measles before the vaccine was available. in 1959 their son Keevin Mac arrived, and their daughter Jana Dene was born in 1963.

in 1970, Dene completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Midwestern State University. Beginning that fall, she accepted a job at Travis Elementary teaching sixth grade for one year and then moved to Reagan Elementary School and taught second grade for the following three years. After living in Quanah for 18 years, they returned to Harmon COunty to live on the farm. Dene accepted a job at Hollis Public Schools teaching third grade. She remained in that position until her retirement in 1991.

Dene had many interests that kept her close to home. She was an avid seamstress making most of her clothes and children's clothing for years. She loved to work in her yard and garden where she found extraordinary joy. Dene had a quick wit, was artistic and was a little bit of a prankster. Through the years she worked as a nursery teacher at church, helped with the vacation bible school, assisted in many meals at the church, and helped at the county election. She also loved spending time with her children and grandchildren who she cherished.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Garland Jones; her son, Keevin Jones (Tammie) of Colony, OK; her daughter, Jana Williams (Kendall) of Hollis, OK; her grandchildren: Alan Jones (Kara) of Weatherford, OK; Kenton Williams (Kelsey)) of Midwest City, OK; and McKenzie Atteberry (Jeremy) of Altus, Ok; great grandchildren: Micah Jones, Melyssa Jones, Megyn Jones, Axel Atteberry, Kenna Williams, and Anslee Atteberry; step- grandchildren: Dylan Crow and Kylie Robbins; sister-in-law, Maurice Searcey (Bill) of Gould, OK, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who Dene loved and cherished.

Proceeded in death by her son, Alan Garland; her parents: Doyle and Maggie Jones; stepmother, Willie Jones; sister, Ada Lou Miranda (Odell); brother, Robert Doyle Jones (Winona); sister-in-law, Peggy Jones; step-sister, Billie Testerman (Joe), and step-brother, Sonny Gee (Joella)

We would like to thank the staff, EMT's, nurses, and doctors of Colonial Manor II, Harmon Memorial Hospital, Southwest Ambulance Authority, and Harmon County Home Health for all the care you have given Dene in the past few years.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Baptist Church of Hollis, 201 E. Jones Hollis, Oklahoma 73550; Hollis School Foundation, 415 N. Main STreet, Hollis, OK 73550; or a local charitable organization of your choosing.

The Jones family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2022 at Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2022 at The First Baptist Church of Hollis, with interment to follow at Fairmount Cemetery, Hollis, Oklahoma.

Services are under the direction of Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.
