Obituary for Alva J. Hill
Dr. Alva J. Hill, age 80, a longtime Altus dentist, died at Edmond Regional Hospital May 16, 1998, after a life of service to his family, church, community and profession.

Interment will be at the Altus City Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Ken Pate officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the church parlor.

Dr. Hill, son of Alvah and Tillie Hill, was born June 13th, 1917 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He married Dorothy Boles of Binger, Oklahoma on October 12, 1940. She preceded him in death on March 8, 1996.

Hill graduated from Kingfisher High School in 1936. He attended Central State University (now University of Central Oklahoma) in Edmond on a wrestling scholarship. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and science in 1940. While there, he was chosen as a member of "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities."

After graduation he taught high school chemistry, geometry, science and physics, then served as Junior High Principal in Marlow, Oklahoma.

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Baylor Dental School in 1947. Upon graduation, he was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, an Honorary Dental Fraternity. Academically, he graduated first in his Psi Omega Dental Fraternity class.

The Hill's moved to Altus in 1947 where Alva established a dental practice, taking a two year leave to serve as a captain in the U.S. Air Force in Japan during the Korean War. He was an active member of the Altus Kiwanis Club, serving as President in 1953. He received the Kiwanis Yearbook Dedication ion 1985-86. He also served on the Board of Directors numerous times and received recognition for accumulating 43 years of perfect attendance.

Hill has served on the City Council, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Chairman of Trustees, and also of the administrative board of the First United Methodist Church. Kingfisher High School honored him as a Distinguished Alumnae at their 1997 graduation ceremony.

Professionally, he has served as President of the Southwest Oklahoma District Dental Society, a member of the Oklahoma Board of Governors of Registered Dentists for six years, and numerous committees of the Oklahoma Dental Society.

He enjoyed growing zinnias and vegetables and entering them in the County Fair. This hobby earned him numerous blue ribbons over the years.
