Jeanette was born May 25, 1940, at the family home near Prairie Hill, to the late Harold and Imogene (Saunders) Milner.
At the beginning of Jeanette’s sophomore year in high school, a new student whose family had just moved to Duke enrolled in her class. The student, a young man by the name of Herbert Turner, struck Jeanette’s fancy and soon after they began dating and then fell in love. Herb and Jeanette were high school sweethearts and later married at Prairie Hill Baptist Church. This union was so full of love and respect it can easily be described as - one for the record books. Jeanette continued to love her high school sweetheart until she took her last breath, Monday, August 5, 2024, in Lawton, Oklahoma.
After high school, Jeanette attended cosmetology school and became a licensed cosmetologist. She worked in this field for a few years before continuing her education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Jeanette’s commitment to this career path included commuting from Duke to Weatherford, Oklahoma countless number of days and miles, all while raising her two young boys and supporting her husband as he launched his farming, ranching, and custom combining operations.
Jeanette dedicated twenty-three years to the students at Altus Public Schools, where she taught Home Economics and Science. She was named Teacher of the Year in 1986. Jeanette retired as early as possible from the field of education so that she could be more available to her family, church, and community. She started working from home as a Beauty Control Consultant and continued to grow her clientele for fifteen years.
A woman of deep faith, Jeanette was a devout Christian since the age of nine. She was a member of the Duke First Baptist Church for fifty-four years. During that time, she served on numerous committees, assisted with all meals and projects requiring baked goods, and had a reputation for helping any children or members when the need arose.
Jeanette was very invested in her community. She was a member of the Duke Town and Country Club for many years. As a young adult she was named Riding Club Queen, during the time the chapter was very active. Jeanette served as President of the Duke Beautification Committee from it’s beginning until her recent passing. While serving in this capacity, she was instrumental in securing the town mural; placement of park benches and Christmas lights that line main street; addition of playground equipment and trees at Burnett Park; and the most recent improvement, the Duke Tiger sign that points the way to Duke School, home of the Tigers.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Imogene Milner. She leaves behind MANY who loved her dearly: her beloved husband, Herbert Turner of the home; sons, Mark Turner and wife Jana, and Rick Turner, all of Duke, OK; three granddaughters, Lauren Turner Cary and husband Jake, Owasso, OK, Erin Turner Reese and husband Scott of Olton, TX, and Morgan Turner Johns and husband Tandy, Duke, OK; three great-grandsons, Beau Reese, Calum Cary, and Jett Johns; two great-granddaughters, Macie Reese, and Quinn Cary; three siblings, all who reside in Duke, one sister, Gayle Ledbetter and husband the late Dale Ledbetter; two brothers, Edward (Bud) Milner and wife Lynda, Harold (H.G.) Milner and wife Donita; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Duke School Foundation, or to the Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
