Obituary for Barbara (Pryor) Dollins
Barbara (Pryor) Dollins, age 82, longtime resident of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at her home in Altus.
Barbara Ann Pryor was born August 31,1938 to Roy and Jaunita Elmore Pryor in Blair, OK She was the middle child of three girls. Barbara grew up in Blair and graduated in 1956, except for one year of elementary in Florida. She was very active at Blair School. She was a member of the school newspaper and annual staff, three years as a librarian. She held the offices of Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer for her class. She loved sports and participated in volleyball, softball and basketball, her favorite. Even after graduation, she would play in "Outsiders" basketball. Her senior year, she received the D.A.R and American Legion awards. She was raised in a home with an open door. Many friends spent hours playing cards and laughing, sharing dresses and shoes or gathered around the piano, singing Christmas songs or hymns. It was never quiet there. Barbara's home carried on the style and that loving Christian spirit.
Barbara and O.W. Dollins were united in marriage on December 20, 1956, in Roy and Jaunita's home. A daughter, D'Ann came on September 28,1957. As a family, they lived in Blair briefly and then moved permanently to Altus. O.W. worked driving a truck. Barbara worked at McClellens on the west side of square. But in 1960, an elevator operator for the National Bank of Commerce, was ill. O.W.'s father was the building superintendent and called Barbara to fill in for the day. Barbara never left employment at NBC until she retired in 1998.
Her titles at the bank continued to change as the years went by. Elevator operator (pre push button elevators), then bookkeeping on to teller, head cashier, new accounts and CD's and finally upstairs to balance the bank everyday at the close of business. During these 38 years, she became a member of various banking organizations and made life long friends through out the state of Oklahoma, one of her favorites was Heisman Trophy winner, Steve Owens, he was in banking too. John Gover owned the bank for many years and annually sponsored a week-end tour for his employees and spouses(stuffy bankers got to kick-up their heels). The charter bus would pull up early Saturday morning and away they would go. Those trips held special memories for her. The bank Christmas parties were wonderful too, Live bands, dancing and recognition of dedicated service to the bank. As the years rolled on, Barbara was room mother for D'Ann and O.W. continued driving a truck for himself. Barbara met every challenge of being on the home front. Being at the bank, any overweight tickets for O.W., Barbara would wire money for the fine. Some how during this time, Barbara and O.W. had time to join Altus Twirlers square dancers and made life long friends. Barbara and O.W. would chaperone football "after parties" for Central Junior High and help sponsor class events.
Barbara loved God and was a Christian. She was a member of First Baptist, Blair and attended every Sunday making sure D'Ann was with her. Living in Altus, she moved her membership to First Baptist, Altus. She was a faithful member until her health no longer allowed her to attend in person. Then she watched Sunday School and church from her recliner and had a full Sunday morning line-up of Christian programs to ease the sadness of not being with her church family.
She fiercely loved her blood family too. Many happy hours celebrating holidays and countless hours of driving to with Sue to visit her baby sister Linda in Colorado, girls trip. As the family increased in numbers those grandkids were the apple of her eye. If it was humanly possible, she never missed a ballgame, livestock show, graduation, Christmas play, birthday celebration or anything they did, she and O.W. were there showing support and encouragement, and not always from the sidelines. The great-grandkids got the same special love. It would be remiss not to share her love of animals, dogs, cats, pigs, lambs and even horses. She was around them all her life. Her heart is full of memories of the long list of pets that she loved, nurtured and kept her company all her life.
Her favorite pass time was watching any college team from Oklahoma play basketball and football, but her most loved team was the Sooners which caused many good natured family rivalry.
Barbara loved people and never met a stranger. She never failed to express her appreciation to anyone in uniform, be it a policeman, fireman, sheriff, or member of the armed service. She was a patriot and loved that she could live here in a free America and got to grow up in Blair, America.
Every Tuesday after she retired, she had a standing lunch date with the Golden Girls. All these amazing ladies loved each other and celebrated all the events in their lives. Many of these ladies are waiting in heaven to continue this weekly appointment.
Barbara goes home to be with her husband O.W.; parents Roy and Jaunita; both her sisters, Sue Todd and Linda Burden, and son-in-law Kevin Williams; nephew Steve Todd; niece Susan Kay Todd Jones and; granddaughter-in-law Sarah Buxton.
Those left behind to remember our precious Barbara are daughter, D'Ann Williams; grandsons, Justin Buxton and Jay Gray; granddaughter Jaime Davis and husband Roper; great-granddaughters Robyn Marie Weeman and husband Ryan, and Harleigh Michelle Davis. Brother-in-law Ray Bob Burden; five nephews, Mike Todd, Kevin and Brent Burden, Billy Dollins and Kenneth Graham; and niece, Nelda Smith. And she also leaves behind so many amazing friends to numerous to name.
The family will greet friends at visitation on Wednesday evening, November 4, 2020 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Chapel in Altus.
Interment will follow at Blair Cemetery in Blair, Oklahoma under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
