Obituary for Bobby "Joe" Thompson
Bobby Joe Thompson was born on December 25, 1937 to Harmon and Wilma (Alexander) Thompson in Altus, Oklahoma. Both the Thompson and Alexander families were pioneer Jackson County farming families.
Joe attended school in Altus Public schools and graduated from Altus High in 1955. Afterwords he attended Oklahoma State University and roomed with his life long friend, Harold Worrell, before enrolling in banking and finance school in Madison, Wisconsin.
In 1958, he married Orenta (Davenport) Thompson, and to this marriage his only daughter, Jo LaDaun (Thompson) Leverett, was born. In 1981, he married Geraldine (Weber) Thompson, who added 3 adult step-sons to his family, Don (Diane), Doug (Debbie) and Jerry (Candice) Alexander.
Joe served in the Army National Guard with the 1st Battalion of the 245th Armored Division from 1955-1963 as a legal clerk. He was employed as a teller and loan officer at 1st National Bank for many years. Then he owned and operated Altus Pawn Shop until he sold it in his late 70's. During his early career, Joe was a member of the Altus Noon Lions Club and the Altus Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. He was very proud to tell people he had lived, worked, and worshiped all his life in Jackson County Oklahoma.
Joe was baptized in the Baptist Church during his adolescent years. And was a faithful, long-time member, deacon, and usher at First Baptist Church Altus, Ok. He was also a perpetual member of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Oklahoma, Altus Lodge No. 62, for the past 60 years.
Joe passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on January 30, 2022. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Charles E. Thompson, and Mr. & Mrs. J.E. Alexander, his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Harmon Thompson, his wife, Gerry Thompson, uncles, Garland (Ernestine) Thompson, Clyde Thompson, Emmett (Ernie) Thompson, Junior Alexander, aunts, Alpha Alexander (Jack) Rape, Betty Jo Alexander, and cousin, Ginger Thompson, and Jerry Rodgers.
He is survived by his daughter, Jo LaDaun Thompson Leverett (Walt), grandsons Jordan (Jessica) Leverett, and Dylan Leverett, great grandsons, Owen Leverett and Oliver Leverett, aunts, Anna Mae Alexander, Ella Mae Thompson, cousins Judy (Keith) Dodson, Sherrie Banister, Ronald (Denise) Alexander, Gary (Bonnie) Alexander, Lyle Alexander, Jeff (Betty) Alexander, and Barbara Fitzpatrick, and many, many more family members and lifelong friends.
The family will greet friends at Visitation from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday evening, February 4, 2022 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the Lowell-Tims Chapel with Pastor Doug Altom officiating.
Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus.
