Carnie R. Bassel

Mr. Carnie R. Bassel, a life long resident of Harmon County, died Thursday July 11, 1991 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held Saturday July 13, 1991 at the Duke First Baptist Church at 2pm with the Rev. Ralph Chapman, Rev. Bud Johnson and Rev. Tim Presson officiating.

He married Bess Cleere on July 7, 1928 at Gould, Oklahoma and she preceded him in death April 7, 1988. Carnie married Wilma Jo Davis December 29, 1990 at Duke, Oklahoma.

Mr. Bassel was a well know farmer and educator. After completing his diploma at Cameron State College in Lawton, he became certified to teach and he taught school at Goodwill, Gould, Louis Hill, Duke, and the Altus Public Schools. He completed his Bachelor of Art degree at Southwestern and his Masters of Art degree at Oklahoma University. In addition to teaching, he also served as an administrator, coach and 4-H sponsor. His main goal in life was to teach sportsmanship and character to all students who came under his supervision. He retired from teaching in 1975, ending a career of 40 years in the classroom.

Carnie was a member of the Gould Baptist Church for 46 years and was presently a member of the Duke Baptist Church. He was ordained as a deacon in 1939. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge since 11935. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner since 1963.

Following the traditions handed down by his grandfather and great grandfather, who were both Baptist ministers, Carnie had a deep love for the church and community. He was a major benefactor in behalf of the Gould Baptist Church renovation program and established a trust fund to perpetuate the care of the Liberty Cemetery

Mr. Bassel is survived by his wife, Wilma Jo Bassell of Duke, Oklahoma; two sisters, Mr. Lorena Fox of Vernon, Texas; Inez Norsworthy of Vernon, Texas.

Mr. Bassel was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Dixie Elaine in 1930; his parents Robert Curren Bassel in 1963; mother, Vennie Bostick Bassell 1922; three sisters, Lena Carrell in 1952; Neva Searcy in 1958; Waneta Bassell as an infant, one brother Eddie Bassel in 1991.

Interment will be in the family plot at the Liberty Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Harmon County Historical Museum, Hollis, Oklahoma.
