Obituary for Carrie Rhee Newberry
Carrie Rhee Newberry, age 86, long time resident of Eldorado, passed away Tuesday, October 17th, 1989, at the Hollis Hospital. Services have been set for Saturday morning at 10:00 A.M. from the First Baptist Church of Eldorado with Rev. Kenneth Coleman officiating. Burial will be in the Eldorado Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Funeral Home.
Born January 21st, 1903 at Rusk, TX. She traveled with her pioneer parents and Cora Crume by wagon to the Boggy community which was southwest of Olustee. After farming for a time they moved to New Mexico returning to Oklahoma and settling near Eldorado in 1913. Mrs. Newberry attended Eldorado schools graduating in 1922. The next year, at the age of 18, she began teaching career that spanned forty-seven years at schools in Hess, Lincoln, Eldorado, and Frederick. Although she retired in 1972, she continued to work with children even from her hospital bed. She was a graduate of Central State University, member of the Retired Teachers Organization, Au Courant Club, Association of University Women, and many other social and professional organizations. She was an active member of the Eldorado First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She married Leo Thomas Newberry on December 26, 1923 at Quanah, Texas. He preceded her in death July 13, 1980.
Survivors include: two sons, Kenneth Wayne Newberry of Turkey and Richard Dale Newberry of Eldorado, OK; two brothers, James C. Crume of Eldorado and Edward Crume of Bula, TX; two sisters, Gladys Messer of Colorado and Beth Ruth Sutton of Quanah, TX; a brother-in-law, Joseph B. Newberry of Claremore, OK; four grandchildren, Jose, Frank, Jean Anne and Angela; four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her husband; her parents; two brothers, Thomas and Everett Crume; two sisters, Amy Tiller and Claudie Thompson.
