Obituary for Charles Ivan Walker
Charles Ivan Walker, age 77, former resident of Altus died in Roseville, California, Saturday, March 8, 2008. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Blair Cemetery officiated by Bill Osborne. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Charlie was one of eight children born of Chester Ivan Walker and Alta Lela Lackey. He had a normal baby's life until his third birthday. In 1933 he contracted polio and was hospitalized until 1942. During this time period the hospital made him a Poster Child for the most improved of children suffering from Infantile Paralysis later to be known as polio.
Despite Charlie's affliction he never asked for a hand, however, he was always ready to extend his to others. Among his many accomplishments included being a master mechanic, graduating Heald College and working for the State of California for 30 years, 23 of which were for the California Youth Authority as a program analyst.
He married Virginia Fay Phillips December 13, 1958 in Sacramento, California and she died of cancer in 1976. Also preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters and one brother.
Survivors include: his only son, Ivan Ray Walker of Pioneer, California; two grandchildren, Joseph Ivan Walker and Jennifer Lynne Walker; two brothers, Johnie Walker of Blair, Oklahoma and Doyle Walker of Sacramento, California; one sister, Patricia Walker Battles also of Sacramento. Charles also left behind many beloved nephews and nieces.
