Obituary for Cleo Winnie Butchee Echols
Cleo Winnie Butchee Echols, age 95, passed away at Colony Oaks Care Center in Appleton, Wisconsin on Friday, September 13th, 1996. She was born Near Warren - Oklahoma Territory, Oklahoma on February 26th, 1901 to pioneer settlers Charles Madison and Galena (Whortan) Butchee. Cleo graduated from Blair High School and the University of Oklahoma. She married James Stuart Echols on June 7, 1926 in Blair, Oklahoma. She was a teacher at Eldorado, Warren, Tipton, Southside and Sperry schools for 31 years. She was devoted to her students and felt a special calling to prepare them for the transition from elementary to Junior High. Following her retirement, she and her husband moved back to Altus where she continued to be an active member of the church and community. She moved to be with her children seven years ago.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Lowell Tims Funeral Home. A memorial fund for the First Presbyterian Church and the Butchee Memorial Scholarship Fund at Western Oklahoma State College have been established. Services are Saturday, September 21, 1996 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with internment at Blair Cemetery.

Survivors include: a son, James W. Echols and his wife Carol of Ft. Collins, CO; a daughter, Wanda Veum and her husband Dr. James of Appleton, WI; one sister, Lois Southall and husband Luke of Blair, OK; eight grandchildren, Judy and husband Dr. David Stone of Milwaukee, WI, Melissa and her husband James J. Spindler of Lakeland, FL, Becky Veum of Milwaukee, WI, David and his wife Janet Veum of Appleton, WI, Dr. Erik and his wife Susan Veum of Minneapolis, MN, Charlotte Kendrick of Norman, OK, Susan and her husband Kevin Malone of Escondido, CA and Karen Echols of Ft. Collins, CO; seven great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Christopher Veum, Kiersten and Gretchen Spindler, Daniel Stone, and Darin and Derek Malone; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; her parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Frank Lollar and a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Anita Butchee.
