Obituary for Cynthia Cross
Cynthia J Cross, 76, resident of Navajo, Oklahoma, passed away December 26, 2020, at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus, Oklahoma.
Cynthia was born on December 11, 1944, in Altus, Oklahoma, to her parents, J.L. and Loyce "Sis" (Schnorrenberg) Wiginton. In earlier years, her paternal grandparents Ramsey and Freda (Lucas), Wiginton, and maternal grandparents Hurbert and Clara (Holdridge) Schnorrenberg were some of the first pioneers in the Friendship community. She grew up and attended Friendship School and was a proud graduate of the class of 1963. She lead her Class B Basketball team to a state championship in 1963. She was selected as First Team All-State Forward and was recognized for the hard work and dedication she showed on the basketball court. She received a scholarship to play basketball for the Flying Queens at Wayland Baptist College. She played in Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, Russia, France, and Germany. While in Lima, Peru, she won their free-throw contest hitting 50 in a row. She was on the USA All-Star team in 1964 and 1965. While on the All-Star team, she won All-American honors in 1964 and 1965. In 1984 she was inducted into the Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame.
Cynthia married her husband Lionel E. Cross on December 21, 1965 in Clovis, New Mexico. They spent 57 happy years together. Throughout their marriage, they lived in Clinton, Oklahoma, Choctaw, Oklahoma, and they made their forever home in the Navajo community. While the Cross family was living in Choctaw, Oklahoma, Cynthia worked at Choctaw Public Schools for ten years coaching Jr High basketball. She started working for Navajo Public School in 1983. Cindy taught English at Navajo Schools for over 39 years before her retirement in May of 2020. She was a member of the Martha Road Baptist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and a part of the kitchen committee. She was also a part of the Pink Lady group and Keenagers. She loved to travel with her husband and going to ballgames to watch her grandchildren play sports. Cindy was an avid OU football fan. She loved monogramming and keeping up with everything going on in the community. Cynthia never met a stranger. She was a people person and knew everyone by the end of her conversation with them.
She is survived by her husband Lionel E. Cross of the home; sons Greg and wife Ronna Cross of Navajo; Jay and wife Myrna Cross of Blair; daughters Stephanie and husband Don Moreau of Navajo; Amber Cross of Navajo; brother Jim and wife Rita Wiginton of Okarche; sister Terri and husband Danny Wilcoxen of Marlow; grandchildren Tanner (Katie) Cross of Blair, Oklahoma, Brooks Cross of Blair, Nathan (fiance Taylor Harrison) Cross of Weatherford, Kalee and Kasey Cross of Navajo, Lindsey and McKenzie Moreau of Navajo; brother-in-law Gary and wife Sharon Cross of Arizona; many nieces and nephews as well as a host of family and friends.
