Don Walton Mathews went to meet his Lord and Savior on April 28, 2010, at the age of 96. Don was born September 13, 1913; in Port, Oklahoma. He was the eldest of 8 children. His parents were Autus and Oma Mathews. He grew up as a child in Sentinel, Oklahoma, and moved to Carter, Oklahoma as a teenager. Don married, Shirley B. Holford, on February 9, 1932, in Elk City, Oklahoma. They resided in Carter, Oklahoma for a brief period before moving to Mangum, Oklahoma in 1933. He has resided in Mangum for the past 75 years.
Don was a combat veteran of WW2. He was a member of the invading force at Normandy on D-Day, and participated in the "Battle of the Bulge".
He was in the automobile business for most of his adult life. He worked for the Ford dealership until it closed. He then worked for the Chevrolet dealership until it went out of business. He then started his own business, "Don"s Used Cars", which he operated until 01/01/07. He decided to take "early retirement" at the age of 93.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, on November 6, 2003, after 71 years of marriage; his parents; four brothers; Leo, Levine, Billy Ray, and Baby Mathews; three sisters; Geraldine Hill, Mary Lee Osborne, and Lyda Belle Allen; one grandchild, Gayla Turner; one great-great grandchild, Devyn Nicole Kerbo and a son-in-law, Tommy Bell.
He is survived by two children; Harley and Louise Mathews of Mangum, and Janis Bell of Altus. He is also survived by one sister, Melba Todd, of Ardmore; one grandchild; Jim Kerbo of Tipton; and three great grandchildren; Devon Kerbo, Kassie Kendall, and Taylor Thompson all of Mangum; and two great-great grandchildren; Alexa Kendall of Mangum, and Cooper Kerbo of Mangum.
Don was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Mangum. He will truly be missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services for Don Mathews will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Mangum with Rev. J.V. Lobaugh officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
