Doris A. Vaughan, age 96, of Altus, passed away Saturday afternoon, June 14, 2014, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, in Altus.
Mrs. Vaughan was born in Jackson County, west of Blair, on June 5, 1918, to Elmer and Georgia Arora (Johnson) Castles. After her father was killed in the Blair tornado, in 1928, Doris was raised by her mother. After graduating from Blair High School in 1936, she and her mother moved to Oklahoma City where Doris attended Hills Business School and later worked at Paramount Film Exchange. In the summer of 1939, she met the love of her life, Milton "Snoots" Vaughan and they were married on September 8, 1940, in Blair. They spent the next sixty-eight wonderful years together before his death on October 13, 2008. A long-time member of the Blair First United Methodist Church, Doris cared for her family and supported Snoots in his job and his many civic duties. In her spare time, Doris enjoyed sewing, working crossword puzzles, making crafts and preparing her delicious homemade pies.
Preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Eva Castles; her husband and a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Vaughan, she is survived by three sons, Wendal Vaughan and wife Sue of Stillwater; Randy Vaughan and wife Jenelda of Hobart, Steven Vaughan and wife Connie of Blair; eight grandchildren, Traci Hensley and husband Jeff, Wendi Lane and husband Kevin, Bailey Hayes and husband Bradley, Bryan Vaughan and wife Heidi, Brad Vaughan and wife Tami, Kristi Davidson and husband Sam, Raegan Vaughan and Malorie Vaughan; ten great-grandchildren, Kylan Hensley, Allyn Hensley, Chase Lane, Taylor Lane, Jacob Vaughan, Matthew Vaughan, Eryn Vaughan, Noah Vaughan, Christian Davidson and Sawyer Davidson along with many other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Doris Vaughan will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Blair First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Blair Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
The family will greet friends on Monday evening from 7 until 8 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
