Obituary for Doris Chapman
Doris Quay Chapman, born August 12, 1927 in Altus, Oklahoma to Orville and Gail Saunders, passed peacefully from this life shortly after midnight on March 29, 2013, after a long illness, at Plantation Village Nursing Center in Altus.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April, 4, 2013, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus, Oklahoma, with Tom Bailey officiating, and internment at Jackson County Cemetery following the services. There will be visitation for the family and friends Wednesday, April 3, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Mom, or "Mamaw" as her grandchildren knew her, was a graduate of Altus High School, and attended Abilene Christian College. She retired from civil service in the 1970's after a career as a medical secretary at the Altus Air Force Base Hospital. She was a devoted member of the Elm & Hudson Church of Christ in Altus, where she attended regularly while her health permitted. Mon suffered all her life with debilitating scoliosis, but she never let it slow her down until the last few years. The matriarch of the family, vivacious and perpetually in motion, you were never in doubt as to where she stood on any issue. Thanksgiving was her favorite holiday. She expected us to come and share a meal with her and give thanks for all our blessings in life. She loved her family and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but her greatest love was her boys. She was proud of all three of them and nothing and nobody ever came before her boys.

Mom was known for her singing, and for years many people approached her at the store or in church, to thank her for singing at their wedding, or for their loved one's funeral. She enjoyed the comfort it brought to them. And her voice came in handy for other purposes. When we were kids, in the summer, and she called us for dinner, we could hear her all the way to the City Park.

She was also a night owl, and when we came to visit, we watched old black and white movies with her into the early hours. Mom's house was a place to relax and spread out. When she could still get around she was a marvelous cook-her Turkey dressing, fried chicken, cream gravy, pecan pie and many other delights have never been equaled. We will miss the wonderful welcoming aromas that greeted us when we came to the house.

Mom was a woman who was never afraid to speak her mind, spunky to the last. On our last visit-- when she saw us walk into her hospital room she declared, "What in the world?" We could only shake our heads and chuckle with her. A life-long Sooners fan, she had already requested an OU windbreaker for Christmas.

Doris Quay Chapman leaves to cherish her memory her three sons, Scott Chapman, of Grapevine, Texas; Russ Chapman and his wife Sabrina, of Plano, Texas and Dr. Randy Chapman and his wife Kara, of Edmond, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren, Justin, Jamie, Katie, Emily, Chase, Cory, Jordan, Zeek, Ashlynn, Livy Quay, and Ava; three great-grandchildren, many extended family members and dear friends. The family wishes to thank her caregivers at Plantation Village Nursing Center, and especially Amber LeGrand, who lovingly nursed and cared for her in her final hours.

Mon is no longer sick, she's no longer in pain, her mind and eyes and voice are clear, and she stands straight and tall once more. As usual her timing was impeccable-she was able to celebrate Easter a day early, face to face with her risen Savior. Her passing at this time made Easter seem more real to us. A reunion in Heaven is now taking place with her mother, her father, her sister Orvella Marie Saunders, and her many aunts, uncles, cousins and loved one who have gone before. We will miss you, Mom.

In lieu of flowers, domations in the name and memory of Doris Quay Chapman may be made to Westview Boys Home, P.O. Box 553, 120 W, Broadway, Hollis, Oklahoma 73550.
