Obituary for Doris Watson McWhorter
Doris Watson McWhorter, age 92 was the wife of the late Clark T. McWhorter of Altus, the mother of Beth McWhorter Eichel and husband Dr. Berkley S. Eichel, the grandmother of Stephanie North and Melissa and Leslie Eichel of California.
Doris was born in Blair in 1911 and was the granddaughter of pioneers of Old Greer County. The Watson's and her mother's family, the Thorns, filed in 1890 and 1898 on land near the present town of Blair. Her grandparents helped to get the first school started and she was especially honored when asked to give the Commencement Address at the Blair High School seniors graduation.
Doris attended Kidd-Key College, OU and received her Bachelor's Degree in education from Oklahoma State.
For many years she taught at Blair school. Every place she worshipped, she taught Sunday School, including the First Baptist churches of Blair and Altus. She was also pianist at the church in Blair. Doris was a public speaker and popular reviewer of books in many Oklahoma towns.
Her family and friends were very important to her. She was president of the Tillman-Kiowa District W.M.U.; A.A.U.W., McDowell Club and Erolethian Club and was very involved in the community and her church in many ways.
She wrote skits, poems, operettas and programs for school and church. Her writing appeared in many magazines and newspapers. Her book of poems, Reflections in Rhythm, published in 1974, was one of her happiest accomplishments.
Doris and husband Clark believed in helping others. They will truly be missed by family and friends.
Interment service will be held Saturday, July 11, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at Blair Cemetery with Dr. Morris Foster officiating.
