Obituary for Dorothy Jean Hunter
Dorothy Jean Hunter

Dorothy Jean Hunter celebrated her 92nd birthday with her family on March 22nd and passed on to her Heavenly reward on March 31, 2021.

Dorothy Jean Houchin was born in Duke OK on March 22, 1929, to Oscar Franklin and Martha Annie Crabtree Houchin. She attended school in Duke until her family moved to Hollis OK where she continued her education in the 6th grade.

Her dad was a section foreman for the MKT railroad. Many fond memories were made riding the train to Altus on weekends to see a movie.

She married Herbert Joseph Hunter on September 6th, 1947, and soon moved to the family farm southeast of Gould OK. They were married fifty-three years before Herbert’s death on November 20, 2000. Dorothy moved to Altus OK in 2001 where she resided until her death.

Six children were born to that union, three boys (Ron, Tony and Tim) and three girls (Sherry, Rita, and Rhonda). Dorothy did her best to keep them under control, but when all else failed, she would speak the dreaded words, “Just wait until your Daddy gets home.”

Her kindness and gentleness were apparent to all who knew her. Those who came for a visit were invited to sit and stay a while, and always offered something to eat or drink. Many games of dominos and Wahoo were played with their children and grandchildren, and neighbors Willis and Ruby Wood or brother-in-law Hestle and his wife Bernice Hunter. Some of those games became quite competitive!

Dorothy worked very hard all her life. In addition to raising six children, she helped on the farm chopping and picking cotton. For a few years she worked at a sewing factory in Quanah TX and also earned her GED during that time.

Dorothy was a member of the Louis Baptist Church. She had a very pretty voice and would sing as she worked. She enjoyed country and gospel music, especially songs featuring the guitar.

She had a talent for writing and once composed the words to a country song. Even though the song was sent to a recording company with no response, she later heard a song on the radio in which the words were eerily familiar.

Also, a treasure was discovered by her daughters after her death. They found a poem she had written to Herbert on September 6th, 2001 – their first wedding anniversary apart. It was titled “To Herbert – Our 54th Anniversary”. In a few months Dorothy and Herbert will celebrate their 74th anniversary together in the beautiful home Jesus had waiting for her in Heaven.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Herbert, her parents Oscar and Annie Houchin, a son Tony Kent Hunter, brothers Edward Allen Houchin, Horace Clifton “Mutt” Houchin, Harrell Haskell “John” Houchin, Cladie Butler “Buster” Houchin and Ellis Boyd Houchin; and one sister Virginia Lee “Shorty) Johnson.

She is survived by sons Ron Hunter (Phyllis) of Duncan OK and Tim Hunter (Sandy) of Eldorado OK, daughters Sherry Woodman (Roy) of Iowa Park TX, Rita Miranda (Gayland) of Altus OK and Rhonda Ellison (Randy) of Gould OK; grandchildren Tiffany Dennis (Kevin), Tara Strider (Mike), Vicki Swier, Phillip Swier (Torrey), Brandon Woodman (Christy), Tina Souder (Lee), Jeromy Hunter (Jamie), Justin Hunter (Alicia), Casey Miranda (Chanda), Brad Miranda (Anna), Scotty Ellison (Mandi), Sara Kendrix (Shane), Shawna Shaw (Johnny), Heather Strain, T.J.
