Obituary for Earl Groves
Earl Groves, age 72, of Altus died at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital Monday evening. Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas Street Church of Christ officiated by Jim Brown. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.

Groves was born December 17, 1921 at Sandridge, West Virginia. He was the son of George Washington Groves and Mamie Riffle Groves. He married the former Laura Flanders November 15, 1952 at Parkridge, IL.

Enlisting in the Navy in November 1942, he served as a Gunners Mate in the American, European and African theaters. Later with the Asiatic Pacific Fleet. After being discharged from the Navy he reenlisted in the Army in May of 1946, later being transferred to the U.S. Air Force in 1949. He served with distinction in the Korean Conflict in 1954 through 1955 and retired from active duty March 31, 1963 at Clinton-Sherman AFB.

In civilian life he was employed by the State of Oklahoma Department of Transportation for 18 years and retired March 10, 1980. From 1981 through 1991 he operated J&N Body Shop and Wrecker Service with his son Neal. He was a member of the Thomas Street Church of Christ and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include: his wife, Laura E. Groves of Altus; two sons, Earl DeVere Groves of Tulsa, OK and Neal Jay Groves of Altus, OK; two brothers, Jurl Groves of Bradenton, FL and Thurl Groves of Newton Falls, OH; six sisters, Ellie Wallace of Macon, GA, Lona Marinkovich of Winter Garden, FL, Mona Parsons of Pasadena, TX, Mae Leach of Milstone, WV, Gay Bullard Coyer of Hurrican, WV and Nellie Mollhan of Summerfield, FL. Additionally, five grandchildren, John Earl and Jason Michael Groves of Altus and Joseph Earl, Joseph Wade, and tyler Lynn Groves of Oklahoma City, OK survive.
