Edward Grady Snow, age 91, of Mangum, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 4, 2013, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, in Altus.
Mr. Snow was born in Millerton, Oklahoma, on January 16, 1922, to Eddie Green and Ethyl (McCafferty) Snow. In 1928, the family moved to Willow where he graduated from high school in 1940. After graduating, Ed worked as a hired farm hand before enrolling at O.U. After one semester, he entered the Army Air Corps in January 1941 and took flight training in Boise, Idaho, Frederick, El Reno and San Marcos. He was stationed at Castolucia, Italy, during World War II and was involved in the following battles and campaigns as a B-24 Pilot: Normandy, Southern France, Rome-Arno, Northern Apennienes, Po Valley, Rhineland, Northern France and Air Combat Balkans. He flew with the 746 Bomb Squad and the 456 Bomb Group, completing 32 bombing missions. He was discharged at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas in October 1945, and returned to Greer County for a short while before enrolling at Oklahoma City University. During this time, Ed worked at John A. Brown department store. He met Joyce Parsons in "the cotton patch" while he was still in high school, but they didn't meet again until after he was discharged from the service. They were married in Oklahoma City on April 16, 1949, while he was attending OCU. Upon completion of his bachelor's degree, Ed taught fifth grade at Carter for two years before they returned to Oklahoma City where he taught elementary at Crooked Oak. He began working on his master's degree at this time. In 1955, they moved back to Southwest Oklahoma where he began teaching at Lakeside School at the Reformatory. He taught there, became superintendent and was there until 1980, except for three years, when he served as Greer County Superintendent. For a short time after his retirement from Lakeside, Ed worked as a mud logger in the oil field. Not one for sitting still, Ed continued his farming and drinking coffee with his buddies at the coffee shop. His most enjoyable times were spent with his many friends and family members and occasionally reading a good book.
Preceded in death by his parents; twin grandchildren, Jessica Renee and Jeremy Cole Hopper; two brothers, Ernest Snow and Clarence Snow and two sisters, Alice Couch and Emma Anderson he is survived by his wife Joyce, of the home; three children, Mark Snow and wife Wilma of Willow, Dana Hopper of Lone Wolf and Starla Fussell and husband Cody of Tulsa; five grandchildren, Richie Cameron, Justin Spears, Allison Dreyer and husband Chris, Cale Fussell and Carly Fussell; two great grandchildren, Cole and Jolie along with many other relatives and a host of friends.
Services for Ed Snow will be at 10:30, Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the Mangum First United Methodist Church with Rev. Iris Deurmyer, Pastor Dean Frazier and Rev. Marsha Purtell officiating. Interment will follow at the Willow Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
The family will greet friends at Greer Funeral Home from 6 until 7 p.m., Friday evening, September 6, 2013.
