Mr. Johnson was born in Carthage, Texas on February 22, 1923, to William Johnson and Leona Carter. Living in Carthage, Edward began working on a farm at nine years old and continued there until joining the United States Army on February 23, 1943. Serving in the 25th Infantry Regiment, his commander wrote in his Separation Records, "PFC Johnson served in New Guinea, Bougainville and Mortai; loaded, aimed and fired rifle against enemy troops; did scouting and patrol work in or near enemy lines of defense; used hand grenades against enemy personnel; fired the bazooka; dug foxholes for preservation." Upon leaving service on January 15, 1946, his commander wrote, "PFC Johnson will be returning to farming where he helped his family on a large farm for eleven years, ending in 1943; raised cotton, wheat, peanuts and potatoes; used a tractor and team of mules to plow and cultivate; fed and took care of cattle and hogs; milked cows by hand and raised vegetables." In 1951, Edward moved to Hollis and continued to farm. He later lived in Wellington and farmed until age 72, moving to Altus on July 30, 2012, to be near his family. Mr. Johnson loved visiting the sick and elderly and helping other people.

Preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Carrie Lee Arnett; one son; thirteen brothers and sisters and one great grandson, he is survived by his wife, Peggy Lee Johnson of Amarillo, Texas; twelve children, Willie Parker of Nacogdoches, Patricia Johnson of Altus, Alice Beard of Lawton, Rosie Williams of Altus, Margaret Newton and husband John of Oklahoma City, Shamara Moore of Dallas, Marilyn Moore of Dallas, Lois Johnson of Altus, Howard Williams and wife Debra of Oklahoma City, Maurice Johnson of Oklahoma City, Corey Johnson of Amarillo and Marcus Johnson of Dallas; two brothers, Charles E.
