Obituary for Edward Lee Stayton
Edward Lee Stayton, age 72, a lifelong resident of Altus, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2008 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital with his family at his side.
Edward was born in Altus on February 29, 1936 to Willie Alexander and Mary Ruth (Williams) Stayton. Edward was a 1956 graduate of Altus High and has always stayed faithful as an Altus High alum. On July 1, 1977 he married Virgie Rose (Matthews) and they were married for over 30 years before his death. Edward joined the United States Navy in 1956 and served during the Vietnam era. He then joined the Oklahoma National Guard and served a total of 29 years of military service for his country. He was a past member of the Altus VFW and worked for the City of Altus for 22 years. After retiring he enjoyed being around the students and they gave him the nickname "Mr. Ed." He enjoyed working in the yard and gardening and he also liked to go fishing. Edward loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them and they loved him and will miss him very much.
Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jerry and Coy; Edward is survived by his wife, Virgie Rose Stayton of the home; two step-children, Lana Eck of Omaha, Nebraska; Jerry Bob Werline and his wife Kim of Altus; one brother, David Stayton of Altus; two sisters, Virginia Glenday of Greenville, Texas; Karen Dinkel of Terrell, Texas; five grandchildren, Rebecca Rath and her husband Chris of Austin, Texas; Christopher Bolin and his wife Tina of Austin, Texas; William Bolin of Michigan; Michille Nicole Werline of Omaha, Nebraska; Kimberly Candice Werline of Altus; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Services for Edward Lee Stayton will be Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
