Obituary for Elbert Augustus Bates
Elbert "Bert" Augustus Bates, 72, of Altus, passed away in his home on Thursday May 4, 2012. Bert was born March 31, 1940 in Wann, Oklahoma, to Benjamin A. Bates and Pearly Ruth Williams. On October 27, 1958, Bert joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. On March 4, 1961, Bert married his wife Johnny Charleen Long who gave birth to their three sons and one daughter. After being discharged from the military, Bert worked many years as a mechanic and had a great love for working on Antique Cars. Bert opened numerous side businesses specializing in auto repair and restoration. Bert was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and Lions Club in Kimball, Nebraska.

Bert Bates is survived by his mother Pearly Ridgeway of Ponca City, Oklahoma, three sons, one daughter, fourteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two step- grandchildren, two step- great grandchildren, four brothers and three sisters.

Bert was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Albert Bates, Charleen Bates, step- father, step- mother, one brother and one sister.

Memorial services for Mrs. Bert Bates will be held at the Trinity Baptist Church of Altus, Thursday 10:00am May 10, 2012 officiated by Rev. Tony Fox and Loyd Lopez. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials in honor of Mr. Bert Bates can be sent to the Trinity Baptist Church Fund or may be left at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
