Obituary for Esteban Hernandez Flores

Esteban “Steve” Hernandez Flores, 85, formerly of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2021, in Aurora, Colorado.
Esteban was born in Sweetwater, Texas to Felix and Nicolasa (Hernandez) Flores. At the age of twenty years old Esteban moved to Altus, Oklahoma, to work in farming. While working in the fields, he met a pretty cook. From this chance encounter, Esteban’s prayers for a family would be answered. On December 1, 1956, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Altus, Oklahoma, Esteban married Olivia Vega, the love of his life. This marriage would be blessed with nine children.
In 1966, Esteban begin working at Altus Air Force Base. He was employed at the NCO club and after sixteen years of hard work Esteban, transferred to civil service at Altus Air Force Base, working in road construction with asphalt and pavement repair. Esteban worked in the construction and repair of the runways on base. His group was affectionately referred to as the “Rowdy Boys.” Esteban took pride in every task. He exemplified excellence in every job he was assigned. He received numerous awards and accolades for his achievements on base. Former President Bill Clinton even asked Esteban to the White House to receive an award for his faithful service to his country and to Altus Air Force Base. After forty-nine years of service, Esteban retired from his job at Altus Air Force Base.
A huge part of Esteban’s life was his devotion to his faith. Esteban served his church, Prince of Peace Catholic Church, working in any way he could. He would help maintain the grounds, the facilities, and any other job that was needed. Making sure his children were raised and educated in the church was of the upmost importance to Esteban. All nine of his children were baptized, received communion, and confirmed in the church. Esteban was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and was in the fourth level. He served his church with the same dedication he served the Air Force.
Esteban enjoyed bowling in leagues, watching the Dallas Cowboys and Altus Bulldog football. He truly enjoyed people and never met a stranger. He was the neighborhood Dad to all the children and was never too busy for a game with his kids. More than anything, Esteban enjoyed being around his family. Everything he did was always for the best of his family.
