Ethel Tella Newman, 93, of Altus died Tuesday. Services have been scheduled for 2:00pm Friday, January 22, 1993 at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Chapel with Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Mrs. Newman was born June 30, 1899 in West Virginia to Elza and Clara Mathews. The family them moved to Oklahoma. She married hugh Newman in 1947 in Vernon, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1962.

Mrs. Newman was a City Clerk in Altus form 1938 until 1949. She served as a bookkeeper for numerous business in the Altus area during her lifetime. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a Sunday School teacher 55 years. Mrs. Newman was a member of the Senior Citizens and the American Legion Aux. She was a Gold Star Mother.

Ethel is survived by her children, Odessa Stingel and husband Odas of Altus, Oklahoma; two stepdaughters-Willie Daniel and Addie Lee James; one grandchild, Jean Hart; one greatgrandchild, Sherrilll Hart; six step-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Newman 4-14-1962; son Earnest Williams in 1945.
