Obituary for Etta Mae Anderson
Etta Mae Anderson, 102, a former resident of Mangum, Oklahoma was received in heaven on November 13, 2020.
Etta Mae Griffin was born to Ora and Sam Warren on June 6, 1918, they lived in Honey Grove Texas at the time of her birth. In 1923 at the age of five, her family decided to move to Mangum, Oklahoma. Etta Mae and her family stayed in a barn along with other families that traveled with them. Meals were prepared outside the barn on an open fire. Picking cotton was hard work but it had to be done in order to make money to survive. Ora, Etta Mae’s mother, would pull her around on the cotton bag when Etta became tired. Her family worked for many farmers throughout the years.
During the years of the great depression, Etta Mae remembered her mother working at times for fifty cents. It was hard for everyone during the dust bowl in Oklahoma. Food was very scarce at this time because they couldn't grow vegetables. The drought and dust made everyday life very difficult, they survived on rabbits and birds for meat.
After the years passed, Etta Mae met the love of her life, Albert Henderson. They married and raised their four children in a 14x18 house. Later they moved to the east part of Mangum and purchased a two-bedroom house. Albert worked at the hospital and Etta Mae did housework.
Etta Mae worked for Southwest Community Action for five years. She and others met at an old school building (Booker T. Washington School) that had been closed after segregation. She would hold cooking classes for the children in the community as well as other activities. During the summer Etta Mae and other adults would take a busload of youngsters to the camps at Quartz Mountain Lake. Children looked forward to staying at the lake and joining in the activities. She also headed and played for a women’s softball team. Etta Mae organized a group that helped many youngsters. She was very active in the community. She worked for the Elks Lodge in Mangum, Oklahoma as a cook and custodian. At one point in time, Etta Mae became the owner of a truck. She and her grandsons would use the truck to haul hay to make ends meet.
A huge part of life was devoted to service to her Lord Jesus Christ. Etta Mae attended the Church of God in Christ, a small congregation. She would encourage the youth to attend bible studies and gospel plays. All the children in Mangum, Oklahoma referred to Etta Mae as “Grandma.” Etta Mae and her daughter Peggy would sing on the radio in Hobart, Oklahoma. She sang gospel songs and Peggy played the piano. Etta Mae was a member of a church organization called the Heroines of Jericho.
Etta Mae worked and took care of Mrs. Brooks for over thirty-five years. When Mrs. Brooks moved from Mangum, Oklahoma to Ardmore, Oklahoma Etta Mae moved with her to continue her employment. After Mrs. Brooks's passing she stayed in the town of Ardmore. She worked as a cook for Lake Murray Lodge, a nurse's aid for five years at the Advance Hospital, and the Kinn Cliff Bowling Alley in Ardmore. Etta Mae leads her bowling team the “Oreos” to the championship during a bowling tournament in Tulsa. She bowled a score of 188. For the last year and a half, Etta Mae was cared for by and lived with her grandson Josh Henderson in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
She enjoyed helping people and would give a person the shirt off her back if needed. Etta Mae was blessed to have a sound mind and continued to help people right up to her passing. She would also drive alone from Ardmore to Mangum annually to be a vendor at the Mangum Rattlesnake derby. She was a vendor for over thirty – eight years. Etta Mae was honored at the derby for being the oldest vendor to attend. She was loved by many in the Mangum Community, the Ardmore Community, and the Rio Rancho, New Mexico Community. She was the matriarch of her family and will be missed by all that had the honor of knowing her.
Etta Mae was a blessing to us all! To God be the Glory.
Etta Mae was proceeded in death by her husband, Albert Henderson; son, Harold Henderson; daughter, Jewell Hurd; two brothers, Clarence Warren and Frank Bo Smith; 3 sisters, Donnie Mae Green, El Nora Allen and Evelyn James and seven grandchildren, Donnie Hurd, Jimmey Hurd, Etta (Sister) Hurd, Freddy Hurd, Vivian Hurd, Joe Davis, and Billy Henderson Jr.
She is survived by one son, Billy Henderson, and wife Jenetta of Ardmore, Oklahoma. One daughter, Elizabeth (Peggy) Reed, and husband James Reed of Mangum, Oklahoma. Grandchildren, Mickey Reed, Debra Maddex, and husband Gary, Charlene Layman and husband Gordon, Josh Henderson and Fiance Christina, Drusilla Henderson, Stephon Henderson, Doris Henderson; and A host of Great-grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, church family, and friends.
Along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2020, at Greer Funeral Home, Mangum, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2020, at the Mangum Church of Christ with interment to follow where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved Albert in Riverside Cemetery, Mangum, Oklahoma.
Services have been entrusted to Greer Funeral Home, Mangum, Oklahoma.
