Obituary for Eugene Preston Thomas
Eugene Preston Thomas died January 9th, 1994 at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital. He was born January 30th, 1909. He was one of seven sons of Mitchell and Corley (Wampler) Thomas who moved from Virginia to north of Duke before statehood. From 1932, he worked on various area newspapers. He published The Duke Times from 1937 with the help of his brother, Frank, and from 1946, was in partnership with his wife, Bertha Fay Combs Thomas. The three published the newspaper until his retirement in 1977. The newspaper was begun as a handset country weekly and always followed the philosophy of its banner line "Have Faith in Duke and Western Oklahoma." Gene was a lifelong member of the Duke Methodist Church on the board of stewards and was church treasurer from the 1940's until his death. He was a veteran of World War II and a longtime member of the American Legion.
Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, at the Duke Methodist Church with Rev. Eugene Foreman and Rev. Ginny Hathaway officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Cemetery, North of Duke, Oklahoma under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.
Survivors include: two children, Linda Gene Sherman and husband Paul of Chesterfield, MO and David Thomas and wife Diana of Oklahoma City, OK; one brother, Frank Thomas; three grandchildren, Matthew Sherman and wife Angela of Moberly, MO, Elizabeth Sherman of Chesterfield, MO and Daniel Thomas of Oklahoma City, OK.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Bertha Thomas, April 6, 1981.
