Thomas

Franklin Levi Thomas, age, 93, of Duke, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 14, 2007. Frank was born in Duke on March 28, 1914 ti Carley Easter (Wampler) and Mitchell Levi Thomas, and was the next to youngest of seven boys.

He started school at Rock school with Jemima Cunningham as his teacher and later he moved to Prairie Hill where Eula Chadwick was his teacher. She also taught him when he moved to Duck School when he was in the seventh grade in 1927. Soon after this he had to quit school to find work, and worked for many farmers in the Duke area. Later he returned to school and received his high school diploma. He and his brother, Gene, published the Duke Times for 45 years. He was the assistant editor, and ran the linotype. After his retirement from the Times, he worked at the Duke Schools where he loved children and made friends with the staff as well. Mitzi Marquart from Duke was a friend of Franks from her childhood and held a special place in his heart.

Frank was baptized in Turkey Creek when he was young. He was a long tine member of the Duke United Methodist Church, where he has served as assistant treasurer for many years. Mr. Thomas was presented a Life Membership into the Duke Chamber of Commerce in 2003, honoring him as an outstanding citizen of the Duke community.

Frank Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and his six brothers. Paul, John, Burt, Eugene, Joe, and Wesley.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews including Linda Thomas Sherman of Cantonment, Fl., David Mitchell Thomas and his wife Diana, of Oklahoma City, OK., and Joel Levi Thomas and his wife, Joyce, of Huntsville, AL. Also, Frank is survived by a special friend Robetha Darby and her family.

The Celebration of Life service for Frank Thomas will be held at the Duke United Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 17th at 10:00 am with Reverend Brett Thomasson officiating. Interment will follow in the Rock Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Duke Chamber of Commerce at the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Duke, or the Duke United Methodist Church.
