Obituary for Fred Dennis Mercer
Fred Dennis Mercer was born April 19, 1940 at Nash, Oklahoma. He was the son of the late Fred H. and Florene (Richardson) Mercer. He died December 23, 2002 in Altus, Oklahoma.
He married Kay Suttle, January 24, 1975 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He served in the USAF for 20 years before his retirement. While in the Air Force he served in Vietnam. During his 20 years in the service, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service award with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Following his retirement from the USAF, he worked for Altus Athletics for 10 years before retiring in 2002. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus and was an avid bowler.
Survivors include: his wife, Kay Marie Suttle Mercer of the home in Altus; two children, Cathy Marie Mercer of Altus, Oklahoma and Robert Wilton Mercer of Brunswick, MA; one brother, Robert Earl Mercer of Tulsa, OK; one sister, Barbara Griffin of Lawton, OK and Mother and Father-in-law, Oma and Coy Suttle of Altus, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Conna Mercer.
Services for Fred Dennis Mercer are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2002 at the First Baptist Church in Altus with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery with full military honors, under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.
