Frena Maye Winters, 80, of Mangum, entered her heavenly reward, Saturday evening, April 22, 2017, from Jackson County Memorial Hospital, in Altus.
Frena was born in Mangum on July 7, 1936 to Golden Baker “Goldie†and Helen (Royal) Hathaway. After attending Mangum School, Frena married the love of her life, Zane Winters, on July 26, 1952, with whom she would enjoy fifty-nine wonderful years of marriage. Zane and Frena established their home in Mangum. Early in her life, Frena worked selling Avon and with Homer Slover at his Jewelry Store in Mangum. Frena also owned and operated Designs Unlimited on N. Oklahoma in the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s, but her most treasured and rewarding career was raising her boys as well as others in the community that needed help. Frena was a tiny little gal with seemingly boundless energy to give whether at work, volunteering at her church, at an outreach program, or at her beloved MHS Alumni Association. Perhaps the fact that she fought and defeated ovarian cancer as a young Mom gave Frena a greater appreciation for life than most folks had. Following Zane's sudden death on January 23, 2011, Frena began substituting almost daily for Mangum Schools. Frena absolutely loved her time with the kids so much that she even volunteered as a sub when her "paid" days were exceeded. If a student had no lunch, Frena provided money to buy one. If a student needed school clothes, Frena took them shopping. As a member of the Church of Christ, Frena was always caring for someone and helping others in any way that she could. In her spare time, Frena loved reading and working crossword puzzles, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband Zane, Frena is survived by four sons, Greg Winters and wife Meme of Piedmont, Glen Winters and wife Linda of Friendship, Gary Winters and wife Anh of Weatherford and Lyall Foster and wife Pam of Childress, Texas; eleven grandchildren, J.J. Winters and wife Jami of Mustang, Dianna Pritchett and husband P.R. of Piedmont, Garrett Winters and wife Kristen of Oklahoma City, Jed Winters and wife Krystal of Altus, Adam Winters and wife Emily of Altus, Cory Winters and wife Kelli of Guymon, Brice Winters of Weatherford, Bradley Webb of Oklahoma City, Brent Webb and wife Kiley of Yukon, Brian Webb of Oklahoma City and Judy Hapgood and husband Mike of Oakwood, Ohio; fourteen great grandchildren, Teagan Winters, Kinley Winters, Gage Winters, Holden Winters, Brenna Winters, Luke Winters, River Winters, Caroline Pritchett, Colt Pritchett, Charlotte Winters, Sam Webb, Katie Hapgood, Lauren Hapgood and Taylor Hapgood; two sisters, Bobbe Herman of Spotsylvania, Virginia and Louise Ward of Houston, Texas; one sister-in-law, Sue Hogan of LaMarida, California along with many other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Frena Winters will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Mangum Church of Christ with Todd McRay officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home, of Mangum.
The family will greet friends at Greer Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 until 7 p.m.
