Obituary for George Raymond Abernathy
George Raymond Abernathy, age 89, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Abernathy was born October 4, 1912 at Lakewood, New Mexico, to Charles Oscar and Lillie (Rogers) Abernathy. The parents were pioneer settlers of Jackson County, but had moved to New Mexico for health reasons. They returned to Jackson County when Raymond was a child. He attended and graduated from Ozark School in 1933. He farmed in the Ozark area for over seventy-five years with his father and brothers, and also worked as a substitute mail carrier for twenty years.
On April 22, 1943, in Duke, Oklahoma, Raymond and Tommy Loys Fewell were united in marriage and established a home in the Ozark community. They lived there for fifty-two years before moving to Altus in 1995. Mrs. Abernathy preceded him in death on April 11, 2002.
He was a member of the Altus First Baptist Church where he servewd as secretary in the young married class for thirty years.
Mr. Abernathy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Roger and Dan Abernathy; and two sisters, Mae Gates and Freda Holloway.
Survivors include: two sons, Dr. John Abernathy and his wife Cindy and Dr. Larry Abernathy and his wife Lynn; one daughter, Frances Abernathy and her husband Craig Sterling. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Larisa Weldon and her husband Russell, Christy Lyles and her husband Larry, Dr. Stacy Abernathy and her husband Jeffrey Jackson, Lyle Abernathy, Leigh Abernathy and Warren Sterling; two great-grandsons, Grayson and Peyton Weldon; one brother, Charles Abernathy and his wife Mary of Altus, Oklahoma; two sisters, Velma Abernathy and Mildred Rowlett, both of Altus, Oklahoma; and a host of nieces and nephews and many friends.
