Obituary for Harold William Jones
Harold W. Jones, age 87 died Monday, January 10, 2005 at Tamarack Retirement Center. Burial with full military honors including a Marine Corps Honor Guard will be held at the Altus City Cemetery on Saturday, January 15, 2005 following Funeral Mass at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on Falcon Road at 12:30 pm with The Reverend Joe H. Arledge officiating under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Jones was born March 16, 1917 in Altus to John Isaac and Georgia Irene Jones. Harold served in the U.S. marine Corps with the "Banana Fleet Marines" prior to WWII. During WWII he was wounded at Iwo Jima. After the war he became co-owner of Jones Pawn Shop with his father, J.I. Jones, and his brother, Gravis Jones, until Harold retired at age 62.

Jones was soon recognized for his talent of rock-laying as he built a huge rock wall on his North Lee property. he then rocked his own home in the country east of Blair and rocked the Knights of Columbus building north of Altus. He did most of the last two after retiring from the Jones Pawn Shop. He was a kind, considerate, intelligent, hard-working, generous, patriotic person who cared very much for his family and his country. Harold was known for his fairness to all people regardless of race, color, creed, or national origin.

Jones was a lifelong member of the VFW, the American Legion, the NRA, the Disabled American Veterans, the Purple Hearts Association, and the Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th Degree.

Jones is survived by three children, a twin son, Patrick L. Jones and his wife Barbara, of Bellevue, Nebraska, a twin daughter, Patricia L. Blackman and her husband Don of Altus, and a son H. Bob Jones of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Craig, Debby, and Deanna Dickerson, John and Rick Jones and Kelly Allen, and three great-grandchildren, David, Joseph, and Shelly Jones. He is also survived by two nieces, Karen Knox and Shirley Updegraf, and one nephew, Gary Jones.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Laura Margaret Sperlazza Jones, October 13, 1992, his brothers, Gravis B. and Bobby S,, his sister, Pearl and both parents.

A visitation will be held at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 1, 2005 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

A Wake to celebrate Harold's life will be held at the Parish Hall of Prince of Peace Catholic Church on Friday, January 14, 2005 at 7:00 pm the day prior to the funeral mass service and his many friends are invited to attend the celebration.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to St. Vincent DePaul in care of Ron or Betty Ray.
