Obituary for Harvey Whittiker Gentry
Harvey W. Gentry, 88, of Olustee, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Harvey was born March 3, 1921, in Placedo, Texas, to Lonnie and Mary (Whittiker) Gentry. He was the youngest of eight children. Harvey married his first wife, Genevieve, and they had a daughter who died at birth. He married Wanda Elizabeth Huff April 11, 1990 at the First Baptist Church in Olustee. Reverend Everett Smalts performed the ceremony. They had more than nineteen happy years together.
Harvey served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese dropped their bombs. After serving in Pearl Harbor, Harvey was deployed to the Pacific Islands, where he remained until the war was over.
He earned his Bachelor"s Degree in Engineering and worked for Fox and Drechler for many years. He built many of the highways and roads in southwest Oklahoma. As a contractor, Harvey leveled the Bunker Hill land in Altus where the Bunker Hill Shopping Center is located today. He later farmed and ran cattle in Elmer, Oklahoma, and was also the caretaker for the Elmer Cemetery. Everyone who knew Harvey thought of him as helpful and compassionate. Harvey was a member of the First Baptist Church in Olustee.
He is survived by his loving wife, Wanda Gentry, of the home in Olustee; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Whitehead of Newport News, Virginia, and Norma Alexander and husband Dean of Othello, Washington; one brother-in-law, Otis Patman Huff of Temple, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Genevieve (also known as "Scotty"), his infant daughter, five brothers, Walter, Herbert, Elvin Lee, Alvin, and Doyle, and two sisters, Delores and Lela.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 4, 2010, at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Reverend Doug Altom officiating. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
