Obituary for Hazel L Hawkins
Hazel Louise Hunt was born on July 30th, 1930 in Granite Oklahoma to William Morris and Roxy Anna Hunt. She was the oldest of four including a sister Doris Maxine, brother Billy Osborn and sister Anna Ruth. Hazel was raised in Granite where she attended school and graduated in 1948. Until that graduation day, unknown to anyone but two witnesses, Hazel had married the love of her life, Paul Hawkins, on Christmas Day in 1946.
After a short stay in Granite, and another in New Mexico, the young couple made their home in Mangum. They had four children over a span of eighteen years, Donald Paul, Gary Dale, Jackie Dan and Darla Gayle, all whom attended and graduated from Mangum schools.
Hazel was a member of the First Baptist Church, Mangum where she served as a Sunday school teacher for over 30 years. She also worked many VBS's serving as a teacher and later as a refreshment coordinator. Hazel enjoyed singing in the choir and praise group as well as serving as chair on the bereavement committee. After retiring, she also led the exercise group at the senior citizens center and would travel to the Baptist Student Center in Altus, weekly, to feed the college kids on Wednesdays. She played a very active roll in her grandchildren's lives and loved to brag about them and their accomplishments. They knew when Grandma pulled in to get them, as she would toot her horn to the tune "Shave and a hair cut - six bits".
Hazel was employed by Loves Country Store in 1976-77, then was sought out and hired by the manager of Puckett's Food Store where she worked form 1977 until Paul fell ill in 1987. Hazel was a "People person" and truly enjoyed working in the service industry where she was fondly nick named "The lady with the million dollar smile". She took pride in helping others to find the best deals, and was known to have an extra coupon or two beside her register to help those in need of saving money on groceries.
In June of 2021, Hazel suffered a stoke and moved to Broken Arrow to be closer to family. She made friends quite easily in the assisted living and kept the staff in stitches with her humor and sarcasm. As time and dementia took some of her words, her facial expressions were loud and clear.
Hazel was proceeded in death by her Husband - Paul Dabnie Hawkins, Mother-Roxy Anna Hunt, Father- William Morris Hunt, Sisters - Doris Maxine Kendrix and Anna Ruth Baker, two grandchildren David Batton and Shannon Batton. Left to honor her memory is her brother Osborn Hunt and wife Shirley, Hinton, OK., Son - Donald Paul Hawkins and wife Debbie, of Wichita Falls, TX, Son- Gary Dale Hawkins and wife Vonda, of Ralston, OK. Son- Jackie Dan Hawkins and wife Charlotte, of Trent, TX. Daughter - Darla Gayle Moffitt and husband Jayson, of Broken Arrow, OK.
