Hiroko Ota Matthias, age 81, of Altus, was granted her well-deserved angel wings on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Integris Baptist Medical Center, in Oklahoma City, where she was surrounded by her loving family.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Tom Bailey officiating. The family will receive visitors before the service at 9 a.m. Inurnment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
Hiroko was born on Dec. 5, 1932 in Okinawa to Koei and Kazu Ota. She was the 2nd of five children. Hiroko grew up working in the fields with her family and lived through World War II. When Hiroko was a teenager, she was captain of her championship volleyball team and was invited to join a travelling theater that performed throughout Japan. Hiroko met a young United States airman, Edwin T. Matthias, whom she later married on March 24, 1959 in Okinawa. They welcomed four children, three daughters and one son. They lived in many different places including Okinawa, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, and Missouri before calling Altus, Oklahoma their home in 1975. Hiroko may best be known to others as a waitress at Furr"s Cafeteria, where she worked for 20 years before retiring.
Hiroko was a devoted wife, loving mother, and an exceptional grandmother, lovingly called Nanny by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, bird watching, crocheting, collecting angels, and playing games with her family, especially Chicken Foot Dominos and Rummy. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Hiroko was also a member of the Elm and Hudson Church of Christ.
Hiroko was preceded in death by her father, Koei Ota. She is survived by her husband, Edwin Matthias of the home; her mother, Kazu Ota of Okinawa; three daughters, Ruth Davis and husband, Brian, of Stillwater, Mary Rogers and husband, Jimmy, of Altus, Janet Asbill and husband, Steve, of Keller, TX and one son, Wilson (Tom) Matthias of Dallas, TX; six grandchildren Samantha Davis, Christie Rogers, Brianna Peterson and husband, Caleb, Chelsea Tapani and husband, Logan, Aaron Rogers, and Adriana Asbill; three great grandchildren, Romelle, Alexis, and Ryan; three brothers, Isao, Koshue, and Takanatie and one sister, Naeko, all of Japan; one honorary daughter, Rhonda Guy, as well as many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elm and Hudson Church of Christ Youth Group, Arthritis Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
