Obituary for James A. Blackwell
Funeral Services for James A. Blackwell will be Monday, February 21, 1994 at 10:00 a.m. in the Lowell Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Hathaway officiating. Burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.

James A. Blackwell was born December 10th, 1932 in Redbird, Missouri. He attended schools in Mountain Grove, MO. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and was a 4-year veteran serving in Korea.

He married Valera Hutsell on January 30, 1953 and to this union three children were born, Teresa, Bryan and Tina.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he was Sunday School Superintendent for 18 years and administrative Board Chairman for seven years. He also served on the Grace Child Development Center Committee.

His community activities included board member of The Towers, past president of Downtown Altus Merchants and was currently serving as treasurer of Altus Great Plains Recreation, Inc. (formerly Jackson County Kids) of which he had been a member for 28 years. He was a member of the American Legion Baseball District Commissioner as well as General Manager for Altus American Legion Merchants for the last nine years.

He owned and operated Blackwell Shoe Store for 35 years on the north side of the square.

Survivors include his wife, Valera of the home; two daughters and son-in-laws, Teresa and Gary Sweet of Woodward, OK and Tina and Lonnie Speer of Altus, Oklahoma; one son, Bryan of Clinton, OK; four grandchildren, Jacob Sweet, Jessica, Stefanie and Nicholas Speer; his beloved foster mother, Elnor Eastin of Willow Springs, MO; a brother, Don Blackwell of Carson City, NV and a sister Judy Kjellberg of Mountain Gove, MO.

The family requests memorials be made to Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Altus American Legion Baseball or American Cancer Society.

He was preceded in death by his foster father, Alan Eastin.
