Martha Jean (Jeannie) Womack was born on February 26, 1933 to Bright B. and Martha Glenna Williams Womack in Apache, Oklahoma. She attended schools in Chickasha, Waurika , Anadarko, and OBU. On June 1, 1951, Jeannie and Arol Steverson were married in Anadarko where Arol was pastor at West Florida Mission, now Bethel Baptist Church. Soon thereafter, they moved to Granite, Oklahoma where Arol was Chaplain at Oklahoma State Reformatory and Jeannie was a homemaker. She made the comment many times that she never dreamed she would live in Granite her entire married life, thinking as a preacher’s wife moving every five to ten years would be what happened. But their roots were firmly planted, and at Granite they stayed. Their son David Arol was born, and a couple of years later they welcomed a daughter, April Ann. Jeannie loved teaching young children at Sunday School, at after school church programs (Sunbeams), and at Falls Creek. She was also a state church worker who traveled around the state to hold workshops for the teachers teaching 3-5-year olds in church programs. Someone asked her why she did all this with 2 young children. Her reply was “God blessed me with these children, and I will not use them as an excuse not to serve Him. Excuses can always be taken away.” Jeannie had a beautiful singing voice, and sang many times at churches, weddings and funerals. The song most people requested was “The King is Coming,” and she loved singing it.
In 1966, she started keeping books and working at Greer Funeral Home in Granite and continued there for the next 35 years. Jeannie was a natural for this job, with her compassion for people dealing with the death of their loved ones.
Everyone who knew Jeannie, knew how much she loved her family. In the early years of marriage, she worked hard to make a welcoming and comfortable home on a young preacher’s salary. She was an excellent cook, artistic at decorating, and in oil and acrylic painting, and she could sew just about anything, so she was able to run her household smoothly. When the grandchildren came along, she became “Bobo,” and she loved every minute of being a grandmother. The only thing better were her great-grandchildren. She went to every event of theirs that she was able to get to: ballgames, recitals, school programs, and church programs, but her favorite was basketball. She was their biggest fan!
After Arol passed away, Jeannie started going to Senior Citizens for lunch and really enjoyed visiting with all the people there. She even began to get involved playing the games, something she had never done before, and she grew to love it.
On December 17, 2019, God reached down and took her from this earthly life to great rejoicing in her heavenly home with Him.
Jeannie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arol; parents, Bright and Martha Womack; sisters, Alvenia Miller and Phyllis Myers Chesser; and an infant baby brother.
She is survived by son David Steverson and wife Judy; daughter April Steverson Hood and husband Richard of Willow, Oklahoma; granddaughters, Jennifer Steverson Quealy and husband Kevin of McKinney, Texas, Amy Hood Esparza and husband Jonathan, Lori Hood Kyle and husband Dustin, all of Willow, Oklahoma; grandson , Matthew Steverson and wife Jennifer of Richmond, Virginia; great-grandchildren , Colter and Kenzi , Kamri and Kaisa, all of Willow, Oklahoma, Sarah, Gage and Breanna of McKinney, Texas, Jack and Campbell of Richmond, Virginia; sister-in-law , Theda Steverson of Anadarko, Oklahoma; brother-in-law , Dewayne Chesser of Jal, New Mexico; and many other loved family and friends.
