Obituary for Jerry Don Chance
Jerry Don Chance was born September 20th, 1944, to Luther Chance and Mattie Bohannon Chance in a half dugout in Arley, TX. He moved to Harmon county and attended school in Hollis, Ok. He left Hollis at 16 years old to work in the Kansas oil fields. He came back to Hollis to work for Mr. Oscar Bryant in 1962 - 1969, making 50 cents an hour. He married Rita Wadley August 29th, 1965 at Antioch Baptist Church. Unto this union two daughters, Amy Cobb of Hollis and Mandi Brown and husband BJ Brown also of Hollis. Jerry Don started working at the post office in 1969. He retired from the Gould post office in 2007 after 38 years of service.
He was very active in the Hollis community for many years. Him and Rita were class parents all 6 years for both daughters during school. He served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce and President of the local Lions Club. He was a member of the FBC in Hollis, member of the Harmon County Historical Society, and a member of the Western Players Association where he participated in many plays at the Jackrabbit Junction. Him and Rita owned The Apple Tree, which was a local tshirt shop.
One of his proudest moments was attending the 2013 Hollis Tiger State Championship Football game in which his grandson played.
Jerry was proceeded in death by his mother, Mattie Chance, brother LW Chance, sisters Juanita Brewer, Edith Tabor, and Reva Ballard Simmons. He is survived by his wife Rita, of the home. Daughters Amy Cobb of Hollis, and Mandi Brown and husband Bj Brown of Hollis. Four grandchildren, Jessie Cobb, Tyler Cobb, Mattie Brown, and Jaden Brown. Four great grandchildren Ellie Cobb, Wrenlee Wylie, Rylee Cobb, and Hattie Cobb. One sister, Faye Mayhall and husband Monte of Monahans, TX. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The Chance family will receive friends 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 2024 at Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.
10:00 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2024 at Harmon Funeral Home Chapel, Hollis, Oklahoma with interment to follow at McKnight Cemetery, Harmon County, Oklahoma.
