Obituary for Jessie Collins Steen
Jessie Lee Steen, age 87, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 21, 2004 after a lengthy illness.
Jessie was born in in Hugo, Oklahoma, February 9, 1917 to Jake and Lucille (Crosby) Collins. She graduated from Fort Towson High School in 1936. She graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1946 with an elementary education degree. At Southeastern she was voted Top Ten Prettiest and Best Dressed of her graduating class. On April 11, 1945, she married Fred Steen in Broken Bow. She taught school in Cedar Springs, Fort Towson and Broken Bow until she and Fred moved to Jackson County in 1952. She then taught school in Altus for one year at Eugene Field Elementary. She then taught fourth grade in Blair Schools until her retirement in 1975. During this time she also helped her husband to establish Peoples State Bank of Blair and worked with him until his death in 1976. Jessie was a member of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma and retired Teachers association. She loved OU football, especially the OU-Texas games and had season tickets for a number of years. But her biggest source of pride was her two granddaughters, Melissa and Meagan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred and her brother James (Buddy) Collins.
She is survived by her son, Rick Steen and his wife Carol of Altus; two granddaughters, Melissa and Meagan Steen of Altus; one sister, Jewell Russell of Hugo; one niece, Linda Irvin of Hugo; three nephews, Jeff and Randy Collins of Hugo and Bobby Russell of Oklahoma City.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Jessie Steen's name to the Alzheimer's and Related Disorders, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Group or the charity of their choice.
Services will be held Saturday, May 29, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore Officiating. Interment will be at Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
