Obituary for Jewett Stephen Scott
Jewett Stephen Scott, Jr. 86, a longtime Mangum resident passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018, at his home. Jewett was born in his family home on November 29, 1931, to Jewett S. Scott and Gladys Wicker Scott (both deceased). He joined 2 sisters, Marie Scott Brandt (deceased) and Jan Scott Caffey (deceased). Joined later by sisters Judy Scott Smith and Jill Scott Talley.
Jewett attended Mangum Schools and graduated. After graduating high school in 1949 Jewett was drafted into the U.S. Army and served stateside in Ft. Chaffie, AR. Upon returning to Mangum, he worked for his father in the trucking industry. He married Twila Arms of Mangum. They work together in the trucking business for many years.
The company grew over the years and had many dedicated employees. At one time there were 206 employees. In August of 1981, Jewett Scott Truck Line purchased Mangum Brick Company and he always used to say, “We bought it at 4 p.m. and shut it down at 5 p.m. while we made updated repairs.†In 1995, a major renovation took place adding a new kiln and drier and computer automation which brought it up to modern standards. The plant produced approximately 8 million brick a year. The Truck Line and the Brick Plant together were the largest employer in Greer County at that time. Jewett valued his employees, and they became friends and family. All the employees looked forward to the Sun N Fun party in the summer at Qt. Mt. and the annual Christmas dinners. He was honored to have been selected to serve on the Oklahoma Mining Commission appointed by Governor Frank Keating.
One of Jewett’s passions was flying airplanes. Jewett, his son Stephen and his son-n-law, Joe Johnson, all learned to fly in the late 1970’s at OSU. He purchased his first plane, a Piper 140, and over the years he owned and flew several planes, Piper Dakota, A36 Beechcraft, the first new plane he owned was a Beechcraft B36 and a Cessna 182. In the 90’s he bought a Beechcraft Baron to upgrade his license to a twin engine rating. Then he further trained to receive his instrument rating. He purchased a C90A to receive a turbo rating. Once everyone had the rating he traded the C90 for the first built C90B King Air Jaguar. He was especially proud that it was custom built for the truck line in their colors.
Jewett had a passion for Mangum and the wellbeing of its citizens. He made sure that the need to remodel the old airport and turning it into an enclosed facilities for the city golf course. He contributed to the resurfacing the city streets around the courthouse. He had concrete poured and hangers built for the airport. Now the airport is completely fence with a runway long enough for twin engines and fueling station. It was then named Scott Field by the town council. As president of the Brick Plant money was always set aside for special projects, honorariums, special needs for children, organizations and other communities. When the city pool needed major repairs and the park needed upgrading he stepped forward and said “I’ll do it.†We now have Scott Park with a new pool and playground equipment.
Other passions of Jewett were deep sea fishing in Mexico with Byron Kelly, boating and fishing with company associates, snow skiing in New Mexico and traveling all over the world. He especially enjoyed his trip to China with his wife Twila and his trip to Scotland with his niece, Jan. Recently, he had been on many trips with his friend, Marie, that were memorable.
Jewett was preceded in death by his wife Twila and his son Stephen. He is survived by his sisters Jill and her husband Hugh Talley and Judy and her husband Leon Smith. Also he is survived by two children; Holly and Joe Johnson of Little Rock Arkansas, Jewett David Scott of Mangum, and a daughter in-law, Mary Jane Scott of Mangum. Four grandchildren; Amy Castor, Lyndsey Johnson, Tana Flores, Tessa Goode; two Step grandsons; Braden Looper and John Burgess; 12 great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren; and his special friend Marie Garrison and many other long time friends.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Mangum High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund at 414 S. Robinson, Mangum, OK 73554.
