Obituary for Joanna Willelmina Allen
Joanna Wilhelmina Allen age 98, of Altus, Oklahoma passed away November 23, 1983, at English Village Nursing Home in Altus. Joanna was born January 6, 1885 near Glen Rose, Texas to Phillip and Emma (Allison) Winn. She married James Albert Allen in 1906 at Cheyenne, Oklahoma. James preceded her in death 1931. Joanna moved to Altus in 1938 from Walters, Oklahoma.
Joanna came to Oklahoma in a covered wagon in 1897. She forged the Red River at Doan's Crossing and arrived 5 miles E. of Sayer, August 20, 189,7, living in a dogout. During the building of the railroad between Wichita Falls, Texas and Wellington, Texas she worked as a cook to the Construction Crew. James worked as construction worker on the railroad. Joanna completed her autobiography in 1982. She stated- Since my life began in Texas I have come a long way and seen many changes since the pioneer days in western, Oklahoma. I believe the people of those days appericated they had more than do the people of today.
Funeral services for Joanna Wilhelmina Allen are scheduled for Saturday, November 26, 1983, at 11 am in Tims Chapel of Memories, Altus, officiated by Rev. John Peel and Rev. John Welch. Burial will follow in the Walters Cemetery, Walters, Oklahoma under the direction of Tims Funeral Home.
Joann Allen is survived by one son, James LeRoy Allen, Wichita Falls, Texas; five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
