Obituary for Joe D. Hankins
Joe D. Hankins, former Altus City Fire Chief, passed away Thursday, March 22, 2001. Services have been scheduled for 4:00pm, Saturday March 24, 220 at the First Baptist church with Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Joe was born July 4, 1932, in Altus, Oklahoma to Lewis and Wilma (Hale) Hankins. He lived his entire life here with the exception of his tine sent serving in the United States Army. He worked as a cement worker and Coca Cola employee before joining the Altus Fire Department. He worked as a fire fighter for nineteen years, then spent the next five years as Fire Chief before retiring from the Altus Fire Department in 1982. After his retirement, he worked with the Altus School System.
On July 4, 1951, Joe and Ellen were united in marriage in Altus, Oklahoma. They spent a wonderful forty-nine years together. Joe was a member of the First baptist Church where he was very active. He enjoyed attending Discovery One sunday School class and serving his church as "Elevator Man". Joe was a friendly, outgoing person who never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed by the host of family and friends he leaves behind.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Jerry, Wendall and Roland Hankins.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen of the home in Altus; three children, Joe Hankins and wife Tina of Altus, Oklahoma, Cindy Bonds and her husband, Gary of Yukon, Oklahoma and Barry Hankins, also of Altus; one sister, Nova Williams of Aurora, Missouri; five grandchildren, Chris Hankins, Tata Zadora and her husband Troy, Heath Hankins, Sheana Bonds, and Daysha Bonds. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Daylen and a third great-grandchild is expected in April; and two very special friends, Jimmy Wilson and Eddie Lopez.
