John Boyd McMahan died Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at 8:00 A.M. The funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M., on Friday, August 25, 2017, with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. The burial will follow at the Altus Cemetery. The family will greet friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6 until 7:30 P.M.
JB married Edythe Joy (Boozie) Howard McMahan on September 22, 1950 a union of 66 years. JB was truly a lover of Altus, often saying, "Everything you need is right here; mountains, plains, Lugert and great hunting and fishing." He never wanted to be anywhere but in Altus. Johnny was born on April 20, 1929, at 621 N. Hudson, Altus, Oklahoma to Boyd and Fannie (Wright) McMahan. He never moved from his home except for serving in the Coast Guard during World War II. He often said, "I was born at 621 and I' m going to be carried away at death from this Hudson Hill." His ancestry goes back to the beginning of Frazer, Altus and Jackson County, having descended of pioneers J.R. and Margie McMahan, his grandparents, who established First National Bank in 1902. He graduated Altus High School and played football and basketball while there. He attended college at Cameron and Hardin Simmons. He was a loyal Altus Bulldog football fan and pulled hard for the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed Tom Brady, quarterback for the New England Patriots. He was right by the TV when football and basketball season began. He also made time to watch the OKC Thunder play, always.
He served on the City Council when the water wells were bought from the Round Timbers Ranch, water now being used again by Altus. He located the land fill property for Altus. He found the land for the city from the Boaldin family and the city purchased it. He also negotiated the purchase of the stained-glass windows at the First Baptist Church in Altus. JB was on the board of the first National Bank, now Frazer Bank, for 50 years and until his illness he attended the board meetings. He was a judge for the FFA program at Altus High School. Cattle, farming and ranching were his life. Also hunting - not killing - always on the lookout he would say; "There are the turkey, a covey of quail, or a doe and fawn." He had a good life enjoying nature in and around Jackson County.
As he grew older he enjoyed driving around each day checking everything and enjoyed seeing things growing. JB's love of Altus was evident in the Banks" many community services, funding the 4-H banquet, funding Altus High sports and education center and endowing the photography gallery and archives at the Museum of the Western Prairie, while he was on the board. There wasn't a jealous bone in his body " he was always glad someone was prospering.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Boozie McMahan, of the home; his children; Robert and Kyle McMahan, his four grandchildren; Megan Meier, Alison Sevier, Cole McMahan and Matt McMahan; his great grandchildren Luke and Madelynn McMahan, and Kate and Calla Meier. JB is also survived by his favorite niece, Debbie Hull and her husband Joe and their children and grandchildren.
He was very proud of his sons and their families. Kyle is a rancher and farmer and his wife, Terry, is a retired physical therapist. Their daughter, Megan, is a doctor and her husband Jonathon, a member of the U.S. Navy. Ali is a registered nurse and her husband, Johnny, a member of the U.S. Navy. Robert is an attorney and his wife, Kathy, a retired teacher. Their son, Cole is an attorney and his wife, Candace, a teacher and coach. Their other son, Matt, was JB's best friend. Matt was at his side when he died.
JB had memories that made him rich beyond measure and we have memories of him enough to last us a lifetime.
