OVERFIELD
John Preston Overfield, age 88, of Altus, passed away, late Saturday evening, August 6, 2016, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, in Altus, after battling diabetes as well as many other health issues for a number of years.
Mr. Overfield was born in Robards, Kentucky on January 3, 1928, to Urial and Lillian (Watkins) Overfield. John was born and raised on a farm near Robards, Kentucky. At the age of 17, he entered public life working briefly in a retail grocery store chain. He later attended and graduated from Lockyear"s Business College in Evansville, Indiana, married the love of his life, Virginia Zieman, May 21, 1949, and started his career in Civil Service for two years at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky before entering military service in December 1951 for 4 years and was honorable discharged at Altus AFB, Oklahoma December of 1955. Re-entering Civil Service in January 1956 at Altus AFB, John retired in January of 1987 with numerous accommodations and awards during his career at Altus AFB where he retired as Budget Officer. He then worked for 10 years at Red River Credit Union where previous to his employment, was a member of the Board of Directors. John was a former member of Tabernacle Baptist where he served as treasurer and later joined First Baptist Church where he cherished all. He was a member of the local Lions Club and enjoyed participating in basketball, baseball, softball and bowling in his younger years and was a die-hard Kentucky Wildcats fan. More importantly, he loved and dedicated his life to the Lord Jesus Christ on April 25, 1965.
He is survived by two children, Shirley Overfield of Altus and Brian Overfield and his wife Melody of Altus; grandson Brian Overfield and wife Silke of Fort Worth, TX; great granddaughters Zoe Brynn and Eva Leigh and great grandson Preston Cael as well as many other friends and acquaintances. His wife of 60 years, Virginia Overfield, passed away in October 2009.
Graveside services for John Overfield will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at the Altus City Cemetery with Pastor Doug Altom officiating. Services are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, of Altus.
