Obituary for Joseph Ellyson Green
Joseph Ellyson Green passed away Thursday, September 17th, 1998 at his home in Altus, Oklahoma. Born on March 23rd, 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa, he attended East High School and Capital City Community College. While in college, Joe worked as a watch repair apprentice at Plumb Jewelry.

On July 27, 1942, he married Louise Fern Albaugh at the First Methodist Church of Ankeny. Soon after he enlisted in the Army Air Corp as an Instrument Specialist and served as a Sergeant in Gila Bend and Ajo, Arizona, until his discharge in 1945. He then completed an apprenticeship in Gemology in Des Moines, Iowa.

Joe and Louise purchased Russell's Jewelry in 1950, later changing the name to Green's Jewelry. Joe built a reputation of integrity and honesty and was respected and admired by fellow business people and customers alike. Joe and Louise worked side by side in the store until they retired in 1988.

As a dedicated civic leader, Joe served many roles. Among those, he was a longtime member of the Downtown Retail Merchants Association, Boardmember of the Oklahoma Retail Jewelers Association, and a 43-year-member of Kiwanis with perfect attendance for 31 years. He served on the Kiwanis Board of Directors as President in 1960. He was a faithful member of The First United Methodist Church of Altus, holding positions of Sunday School Superintendent for eight years, member of the Administrative Board, President of the Methodist Men as well as President of the Excelsior Sunday School class. Joe was appointed the Head of Scout Leader Training and Cub Master for Wilson Elementary School in 1955 and 1956.

From 1950 until 1970, Joe acted as the Official Watch Inspector of the Katy Railroad. The Altus Chamber of Commerce named Joe the Christmas Parade Chairman numerous years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Downtown Housing Authority as well as the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army.

Joe will be remembered lovingly as a gentle, kind-hearted man and much respected jeweler. After his retirement, he and Louise ran J&L Jewelry Repair in Altus until his death. For over 50 years Joe took great pride in his work and his many customers will miss his ready smile and quiet ways. Joe was an avid reader and collector of antique cars and pocket watches. He was a beloved son, husband, father and grandfather, brother-in-law and friend. He will be missed greatly, but remembered with a smile.

Joe and Louise celebrated 56 years of marriage this year. They were the proud parents of three sons; Alan and his wife Mary Sue of Oklahoma City and their daughter Stephanie Green of San Antonio, son Aaron of Oklahoma City, daughter DeDe Murcer of Dallas and son Deric Murcer and his wife Julie of Oklahoma City. David and wife Deby and sons Dustin and Austin of Bedford, TX. Joe is also survived by his extended family, the Albaugh's, in Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Ralph and his brother Donald.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lowell Tims Funeral Home. A celebration of Joe's life will be held at 11:00 Monday at The First Methodist Church of Altus. Memorials may be made to The First Methodist Church Building Fund.
