Joy Hodge Taylor Jones
Joy Hodge Taylor Jones of Altus, expired September 7, 1993, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born July 5, 1923, in Fort Worth, Texas to George Henry and Nettie J. Hodge. She married Ulysses Harold Taylor in April 1955 at Lancaster, Texas, and he preceded her in death in January 1959. Thereafter she married Edgar Jones of Altus on February 17, 1962, in Vernon, Texas. Th died January 9, 1977.
Joy received a Bachelors Degree in Music Education at Wyile College in Marshall, Texas and a Masters degree in Elementary Education at Oklahoma State University in Norman. She began teaching in Spencer, Oklahoma and taught at Watonga before coming to Altus as a teacher in 1967. She taught at Lincoln school and Robert E. Lee School and retired in 1986 as an Oklahoma Educator at Eugene Field Elementary School with a total of 39 years of teaching.
At an early age, she joined bakers Chapel, AME Church in Fort Worth, Texas. A talented musician, she was pianist and organist for several churches in the Fort Worth area. In later life, she was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Altus. As a member of the United Methodist Church Women, she served on the Council of Ministries at the local level as well as the district level.
she was a member of Zeta Phi beta Sorority Chapter in Oklahoma City and the Lily of the Valley Order of the Eastern Star in Altus for 6 years where she was an associate conductress. She was a member of the Oklahoma educators Association and Jackson County Retired Teachers Association, serving at all levels. As a member of the American Association of University Women, she held every office including president on the local and state levels.
Survivors include one son, Harold H. Taylor, one daughter-in-law, Josephine P. Taylor; her mother, Nettie J. Hodge Register of Altus; one grandson, Brian L. Taylor of Altus; one brother, T.H. Hodge of Dallas, Texas; one sister-in-law, Bernice Hodge of Dallas, Texas; one cousin, Lonnie Dixon of Fort Worth, Texas; one god child, Katrina Kay Mackey; and a host of very special friends and relatives.
