Juanita Pierson, 99, resident of Mangum, Oklahoma was called home on April 18, 2024. Juanita was born on April 9, 1925, in Mangum, Oklahoma to John Elmer Thomas and Margaret (Sullivan) Thomas. Juanita lived a very full life. It's been said that quality measures life and not quantity but the good Lord blessed her with both. Not someone who could sit still, Juanita was always on the move. From her early years of raising two rambunctious boys, helping with school activities and 4H projects. She was not afraid to get dirty. She was able to take any job great or small and do it with a smile, even when she hated the task at hand. You would never have known that she hated chickens, she would still tend to them with a smile. She and Grandmother Thomas would help prepare the chickens for the fair. Juanita was also passionate about gardening, be it flowers, or food, it was easy to tell she had a green thumb. She would talk about how at times, if she was sad or depressed all she needed to cheer her up was a stroll in her garden. She also said this was her one-on-one time with the Lord. Everyone in the family knew if they were in trouble because she would be swinging the hoe at the weeds and you knew it was best to stay away. All winter she would make plans and prepare for her summer garden. When summer came you knew she would be hard at work canning and making pickles because you would smell the vinegar when you walked to the door. As she got older, she scaled down the size of her garden. She would tell everyone she just wanted a “small garden, “ which meant it would be the size of one football field rather than two. Juanita loved her church and was a devoted servant of the Lord. She became the “Avon Queen Pin” of Greer County. Everyone knew who the “Avon Lady” was and always looked forward to seeing her. She always remarked how she just enjoyed interacting with people and if she made a little money along the way that’s not too bad. Above all, Juanita saw this as an opportunity to minister to others, help people in need, and check in on the people who didn’t have anyone. She didn’t just sell Avon, she provided comfort for many people. Of course being the Avon Lady, the family always knew what they would get for Christmas. Juanita was cherished, adored, and loved and although the world seems a little empty without her in it, life will go on and her spirit will always be there when people share their memories of “The Avon Lady.” She was a Christian, a Daughter, a Sister, a Wife, a Mother, a Grandmother, a grandmother, she was so many things to so many people. The Lord called her home and she will be missed.
