Kenneth Lewis Higgins, age 82, of Mangum, passed away Saturday morning, January 4, 2014, at Grace Living Center, in Mangum.
Mr. Higgins was born in Reed, Oklahoma on November 30, 1931, to Lewis and Lola (Garrett) Higgins. Kenneth attended school at Reed, Lone Wolf and City View before starting to school in Mangum in the seventh grade. He graduated from Mangum High School in 1949. On June 14, 1950, he married the love of his life, Louella Marie Sewell, and they spent the next sixty-three wonderful years together until his death. After high school, Kenneth attended Oklahoma City University School of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. For five years, Kenneth worked as a refrigeration specialist for General Electric before moving back to Mangum as manager and a partner in Garrett"s Furniture. He sold his interest in the furniture store in 1978 and operated Higgins Appliance and Refrigeration until his retirement in 1992. A member of the Trinity Baptist Church, Kenneth has served as Sunday School Secretary since 1961. He also was a member of the Lions Club, participating in many of their activities and service projects throughout the community. An avid bower, Kenneth participated in league bowling at Southwest Bowl, in Mangum, until it closed, and later at Town and Country Bowling, in Altus. Kenneth and Lou enjoyed motorcycle trips for many years and later traveled in their motor home for months at a time. Kenneth was a man who loved his Lord and always enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert; a great granddaughter, McKenna Downey and a sister, Wanda Jean Edge, he is survived by his wife, Lou, of the home; one son, Mike Higgins and wife Linda of Edmond, Oklahoma; two daughters, Pat Fraley and husband Bob of Lewisville, Texas and Dawn Boyajian and husband John of Mableton, Georgia; five grandchildren, Traci Hooper and husband Al, Melanie Curry, Ryan Fraley, Jady Higgins and Owen Higgins; five great grandchildren, Zac Downey, Heather Downey, Kazi Curry, Ethan Neff and Addie Neff ; two sisters, Sue Buchanan and husband Jim of Chandler, Arizona and Peggy Castellanos and husband Pete of Columbia City, Oregon; two aunts, Clara Carpenter of Altus and Helen Kusel of Palm Desert California along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Kenneth Higgins will be at 3 p.m., Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at the Trinity Baptist Church, with Pastor James Hopkins and Pastor Alvin Funkhouser officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
