Obituary for Lela Garnett
Mrs. Lela (Barnard) Garnett, age 93, long time and prominent resident of Altus and this area, died this morning (wed) at the English Village Nursing Home.

Born at Manteno, Illinois on November 17th, 1882, she attended public schools of Beloit, Wisconsin and Chicago receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Illinois in 1905. At the university she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Social Sorority and Mortor Board Honorary Society. Upon graduation she taught in the Chicago Public School Systems for a period of the next five years. She was married in Chicago on September 1, 1910 to the late Elmer L. Garnett. They made their home in Altus where she remained until her death. Mr. Garnett died in 1966.

Mrs. Garnett was a leader in the social, civic and religious life of this area. She was a charter member of the Altus Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Clionian Club, the P.E.O. Social Sorority and a number of other clubs. In 1925 she was elected to the Altus School Board and served as a member and secretary for eight years, the only woman to have served on the Board. During her tenure, the present high school building and Eugene Fields Grade School's were built. She was interested in Library Service and was most instrumental in the establishment of the first City Library. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church having affiliated with that Church immediately upon her arrival in Altus. She served for many years as a Sunday School Teacher and was very active in its Missionary Society. In 1971 she was forced to give up her home at 801 East Commerce due to failing health and moved to English Village where she lived until her death.

Survivors include: two sons, Hugh and Logan Garnett of Altus; three daughters, Mrs. Charles Engleman of Clinton, Mrs. Louis Sharpe of Checotah, OK and Marjorie McAskill of Altus; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services have been set for 2:00 P.M., Saturday at the Lowell Memorial Chapel, officiated by Rev. Richard McIlnay. Burial will be in Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Funeral Home.
