Leon Barnes, age 94, of Altus died Monday, September 10, 2007.
He was born in Hillsboro, Texas on December 24, 1912 to William C. and Etta Mae (Loftis) Barnes. In 1914, when he was two years old, the family moved to Jackson County and lived on various farms in and around the Navajoe and Friendship communities. He attended the Clabber Flat and White schools, later Ozark and Friendship schools where he graduated as high school valedictorian in 1932. At Friendship he participated in both basketball and baseball. After graduation he attended business college in Oklahoma City.
In 1934 he married his high school sweetheart, Beatrice Shackelford. They settled on a farm in the Friendship community. He later also worked as a bookkeeper and manager of the Friendship Co-operative Gin.
He joined the Midway Church (Friendship Methodist) in 1933. For over forty years he served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher.
In 1972 they moved to Altus where he was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church and was also active in the Senior Center. His pastimes were playing dominoes and watching the Atlanta Braves baseball games on TV.
He loved his family, friends and his church. He enjoyed telling stories and jokes, and was known for his great sense of humor.
He and Beatrice were married for 59 years. She preceded him in death in 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Virgil, L.B., and Elmer.
He is survived by his daughter, Twila Bearden and husband Edgar of Santa Fe NM, four grandchildren, Lisa Conley and husband David of Wentzville, Mo. Leah Bearden of Tacoma, Wa, Sherri Ansay and husband William of
sun Prairie, Wi., Jaye Hawkins and husband Dean of Las Cruces, NM, six great-grandchildren, Sarah and Adam Conley, Monique and Rachel Ansay, and Callie and Hannah Hawkins. He is also survived by one sister, Bonnie Johnson of Altus and other relatives and good friends.
