Obituary for Lola Martin
Lola Marie Martin died at the age of 92 on March 19, 2013 in Altus, Oklahoma.
Lola was born at the family home on May 12, 1920, to Ben and Florence Fowler. She
attended school at Martha and graduated from there in 1938. Lola then attended
Southwestern Oklahoma State College at Weatherford and became a certified
elementary teacher. She taught school for 1 1/2 years.
Lola married Cortis S. Martin on October 4, 1941. They were married 50 years until
Cortis died in 1992. Lola worked at NBC Bank, Arkla Gas and Gregg and Buck Real
Estate and Insurance. Lola and Cortis owned The Undercover Shop in Altus for 16
years. After retiring, Lola lived in Bergen Park, Colorado, and Oklahoma City before
moving back to Altus where she lived at Tamarack Assisted Living Center. She worked
as a volunteer at Jackson County Memorial Hospital where she put her retail skills to
work again in the hospital gift shop. She was a faithful member of Martha Baptist
Church and then Altus First Baptist Church.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Florence Fowler, her husband,
Cortis and her brother Ben Howard Fowler. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn
Martin, of Missoula, Montana, and one grandson, Ty Russell of Norman, Oklahoma.
Lola took great pride in watching Ty work as the sports photographer for OU. She
always had enjoyed watching OU sports, but she liked them even more when she knew
that Ty was photographing the games. Lola is also survived by one sister, Mary Jane
Winsett, and a niece Jackie Witte of Altus, and two nieces in California, Carol Fowler
and Sandra Fowler Elliott.
Memorial Service will be held at the Lowell-Tims Chapel Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 10:30 am. Officiated by Reverend Doug Altom.
