Marjorie Lurine Peter Norman died Tuesday, March 25, 1997 at the Ware Memorial Care Center in Amarillo, Texas. Funeral arrangements will be made in Altus, Oklahoma by the Lowell Tims Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Altus City Cemetery. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. at the Thomas Street Church of Christ with Jack McKeown officiating. Following the services, the family will receive friends and relatives in the fellowship room.

Mrs. Norman was born December 10, 1911 to Elmer Earl Peter and Ethel Drumm Peter near Frederick, Tillman County, Oklahoma. She graduated from high school at Wilson Consolidated School, attended Oklahoma A&M College for two years, and received her BA in music education from Southwestern State Teachers College in the summer of 1936. She taught first grade for three years in Frederick, Oklahoma. During that time, she met J. Dennis Norman, who was a high school teacher in Frederick, and they were married on May 29, 1937. They moved to Altus, Oklahoma during the summer of 1938. During the next few years, their two sons were born, and Marjorie taught private piano lessons. She resumed public school teaching in 1947 and taught fifth grade and choral music at Washington School until she retired in 1975 after 34 years of teaching. In August of 1995, the couple moved to Amarillo, Texas.

She was an active member of the Thomas Street Church of Christ where she taught Bible classes for many years. She was a member of the Gladiolus Flower Club and the Anne Lee Chapter of the D. A. R. She was also a member of the Jackson County Retired Teacher's Association.

She was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Norman of New York City, New York; one brother, Ralph Peter of Davidson, Oklahoma; and one sister, Dorothy Johnson of Altus, Oklahoma.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, J. Dennis Norman of Amarillo, Texas; one son Joe Norman and his wife Sue of Amarillo, Texas; two grandsons, Jeff Norman and his wife Jill of Edmond, Oklahoma and John Norman of Irving, Texas; one great-grandson, Jack Norman of Edmond, Oklahoma; one brother, William Peter of Frederick, Oklahoma; one Sister, Beth Carter of Bloomington, Indiana; and many in-laws, nephews and nieces.

The family will be at the Ramada Inn in Altus. They request memorials be sent to the High Plains Children's Home, P. O. Box 7448, Amarillo, Texas 79114 or the Alzheimer's Association.
