Mark Duane Nelson, 53, was born in Hobart, Oklahoma on July 16, 1960, to Glen C. and Elnora F. (Real) Nelson. He passed away suddenly at his life-long home, in Oklahoma City, on May 28, 2014.
He attended Barnes Elementary, Carl Albert Middle School and Carl Albert High School where he enjoyed playing baseball, football and basketball. He graduated high school in 1979.
Mark started his career as a dispatcher with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety in 1981. He met his wife, Elizabeth Dockery while working for DPS and they married in 1984. His first daughter, Monica, was welcomed into the world in December of 1984. He graduated from the 43rd Oklahoma Highway Patrol Academy in 1988. This was also the year that his second daughter Laura Beth was born. Mark's son, Grant Ray, was born in 1989. He was a dedicated trooper until he retired in 2006. After retiring from DPS, Mark worked as a US Marshall for a time, but was retired when he passed away.
Mark"s hobbies included amateur weather forecasting and tornado chasing, watching OU sports, fishing and coaching little league baseball. His pride and joy were his three children. He enjoyed spending time with them at his parent"s lake house in Eufaula, where his uncle David D. Real also had a cabin.
He was a long-time member of Kingsview Free Will Baptist Church. His life was centered upon God, family, friends and also his brothers from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Survivors include his mother, Elnora F. Nelson; one brother, Neal Ray Nelson; one sister, Donna Sue Nelson; daughter, Monica Nelson and spouse Bryan, granddaughter Lyla Glyn Walters; daughter, Laura Mann and spouse Brad, granddaughters Keyonna, Kimberly, Mylee and Avery, and grandson Ryder; son, Grant Ray Nelson and niece Hillary Glyn Wilkinson.
Mark was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father, Glenn and his sister, Glenna Nelson.
Funeral services for Mark Nelson will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at the Southern Hills Baptist Church Chapel, located at 8601 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Oklahoma City, OK. Mark will lie in state at Moore Funeral Home, located at 400 S.E. 19th Street in Moore.
